  • VPN's--The Good, Bad, & Ugly

Tom and Chunga are back from their holiday break!

As they get 2023 underway, Chunga has been noticing that there's been a lot of talk in the media about cybersecurity and related issues that will be facing all of us in 2023. One of the articles Chunga read was focused on VPN's.

Tom says that he and Chunga haven't nearly enough time talking about VPN's. One of the things Tom finds most interesting is how many people use a VPN everyday without even knowing it, or understanding what it does. Come to think of it, Chunga may not truly understand why VPN's are so important.

Consumer Reports is saying that VPN's may be creating a false sense of security and some of them may actually make you less safe! In this episode of The Hacks, Tom and Chunga debunk some of the more common myths about VPN's and give you some key things to watch out for, as well!

  • Due Diligence. The Most Important Term In 2023.

It's the last show of 2023! Tom and Chunga are ready to start their holiday break!

As they look forward to 2023, Tom says there's a term that is going to be a huge factor in wether or not you and/or your business is going to be successful next year. That term is "due diligence".

Due diligence is something that Chunga feels has been severely lacking in virtually every area of tech, and the fallout from and industry perspective has been severe. Tom completely agrees and says it's something he's been worried about for years. He feels that this problem rose from tech companies being too over confident when the economy was good and chose to grow too fast.

Both Chunga and Tom have some advice for 2023 and how you can make due diligence a higher priority on every level of your live and in every area of your business!  HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

  • The FTX Disaster--How Does It Affect Tech?

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Tom Hatch saw a fantastic new movie called "Glass Onion". One of the main themes of this movie is that an awful lot of the professionals working in the tech industry aren't nearly as smart as everybody thinks they are.

Tom says that is very much the case in the real world, as well! The most recent example of this is a crypto-currency exchange company called FTX. Somehow this company and its owner, a guy named Sam Bankman Fried managed to lose 16 billion dollars in crypto, literally overnight! How is it possible for something like this to happen? Will a disaster like this, have a large, negative effect on the tech industry as a whole?

Chunga has some opinions, Tom has some observations, and he also has some predictions about how things will shake out.  Here's a hint, it's not good! Listen NOW!

  • Identity Verification Software--Its Really Hard To Do!

Tom Hatch is just back from VMware Explore Europe. Thanks to everyone who came to see Tom speak about Salt Project!

Wow, the tech industry is really taking its lumps in 2022. Admittedly, Chunga hasn't worked in the tech space nearly as long as Tom, but he's never seen things so unsettled and messy during his time.  While Tom is definitely a veteran in this industry, he agrees with Chunga.  He's never seen it so crazy.

One of the most significant hot-button issues over the past few weeks has been drama surrounding identity verification and the software used to make it possible. Chunga is a bit perplexed as to why there's so much confusion and noise around this process and how to do it effectively. Tom on the other hand isn't surprised and has an explanation. Simply put, it's hard. Much more difficult than most people--even in tech--may realize.

In this episode of The Hacks, Tom explains the problems, the drama, and why it's so hard to get identity verification right. Listen now!

  • Is Your Cloud "Star Trek" or "Star Wars"?

Are you in control of your cloud-based infrastructure? Are you really? Most people would say, yes!  They also probably think it's a well-oiled machine, something that's state-of-the-art. The reality is, it may have started that way, but as technology spreads out, things tend to shift from Star Trek to Star Wars.

Tom uses this analogy to explain that reality is messy. Your cloud needs to function the way you need it to, right now.  The work needs to get done and it will only get more complex. The grim reality, according to Tom, is that most cloud-based infrastructure is on life support. It works just well enough for you to think that everything is fine! It feels like you're on the Starship Enterprise when in reality, your cloud is more like the Razor Crest from The Mandalorian.

Why does this happen? Why is the cloud so dangerously dirty, and some would say unstable, even for the top tech companies in the industry? Tom says there's a common reason for these issues, and these reasons aren't going to change anytime soon.  What are they?  Listen now to find out!

  • Social Media Software & Business. Is it Doomed to Fail?

Tom and Chunga are taking a cold, hard look at social media software and the industry as a whole. We all use some type of social media, multiple times a day. It has become part of the fabric of our lives and identities!  With all this common usage, Tom and Chunga are confused and curious why it seems to be struggling so badly in a variety of different areas.

People never seem to be happy with the software, investors never seem to be happy with the progress and future direction of each platform and to make things worse, the platforms tend to make all of us unhappy with each other!

Tom and Chunga will talk about these problems, look at possible solutions and ask the question "Is social media doomed to fail"? Listen now!
