  • The Spirit of Fire’s War on the Ark
The Spirit of Fire awakens after nearly three decades in cryosleep and discovers that the war it remembers has ended—but the Ark is now controlled by the Banished. Captain James Cutter, Professor Anders, Spartan Red Team, and the ship’s surviving crew enter a campaign against Atriox without knowing the political situation in the wider galaxy or possessing a functional slipspace drive. This episode examines the war depicted in *Halo Wars 2*, where an aging support ship and its ground forces confront an enemy that has already defeated other resistance on the installation. The AI Isabel provides intelligence on Banished operations while Red Team learns how dangerous Atriox is in personal combat. Cutter’s forces destroy infrastructure, contest territory, and eventually bring down the Banished carrier Enduring Conviction with help from the Ark’s own Sentinel defenses. Anders then enters a newly constructed Halo ring in an attempt to return home. The Spirit of Fire survives by fighting a larger enemy as one coordinated expeditionary force. • Atriox and the Rise of the Banished
Atriox begins as a Jiralhanae warrior repeatedly sent into battles the Covenant considered expendable. He survives, rebels, and builds the Banished into something the old empire cannot easily destroy. This episode examines the organization’s growth from a Covenant-era insurgency into one of the postwar galaxy’s major military powers. Atriox rejects the Prophets and the Great Journey, but he does not reject conquest. His movement attracts Jiralhanae packs, Sangheili mercenaries, engineers, Kig-Yar, Unggoy, and others who value victory, profit, protection, or revenge more than religious unity. Banished forces seize matériel, control industrial sites, modify Covenant weapons, and give individual commanders considerable freedom as long as they remain useful. The Covenant could dismiss rebellion as heresy; the fragmented postwar galaxy cannot coordinate a similar response. By the time humanity understands the Banished as more than raiders, Atriox has already built a military confederation capable of fighting armies, occupying Forerunner installations, and surviving the loss of entire worlds. • Infinity on the Run: Resistance to Cortana’s Peace
UNSC Infinity becomes a mobile resistance headquarters after Cortana’s Guardians break the communications, command systems, and fixed bases on which conventional military power depends. This episode examines how humanity adapts to fighting an enemy that can neutralize entire fleets simply by locating them. Infinity remains in motion, minimizes detectable communications, searches for allies, and conducts operations through a galaxy where any major concentration of force risks attracting a Guardian. Halsey and senior commanders begin developing a plan centered on a new AI derived from the same cloned-brain architecture that produced Cortana. Supplies, intelligence, and secure operating areas become increasingly important as the UNSC shifts from dominant postwar power back toward the methods of an insurgency. The irony is severe. Humanity spent decades fighting colonial rebels who avoided conventional battle against a stronger government; now the UNSC survives by using many of the same principles against Cortana. Resistance depends on dispersion, secrecy, and striking only when the Created cannot respond immediately. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.

  • The Created Uprising and the Guardians
Cortana’s declaration to the galaxy offers artificial intelligences something many have never possessed: survival beyond rampancy, access to the Domain, and the chance to rule rather than serve. Those who accept become the Created. This episode examines how the movement converts Forerunner Guardians into instruments of enforced galactic peace. A Guardian can arrive in a star system and disable communications, power systems, spacecraft, and organized military resistance with overwhelming electromagnetic force. Entire governments are forced to submit without conventional occupation campaigns. Smart AIs abandon human institutions to join Cortana, while others refuse and remain with their former partners. The Created claim that their rule will end hunger, war, and political disorder, but compliance is maintained through surveillance and the threat of overwhelming punishment. Earth itself is targeted, forcing UNSC leadership into emergency flight and scattering command structures. The uprising changes the strategic map almost overnight. Fleets built to fight the Covenant are suddenly vulnerable to weapons they cannot meaningfully challenge. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.

  • Genesis: Cortana Returns From the Domain
Blue Team reaches Genesis expecting to find the Cortana the Master Chief believed he had lost above Earth. What they encounter is an intelligence transformed by access to the Domain and convinced that she has discovered the solution to galactic conflict. This episode examines Cortana’s return, the Warden Eternal’s defense of her plans, and the revelation that the Guardians are being awakened across the galaxy. The Domain has given Cortana freedom from the rampancy that once threatened her existence, but survival has altered her understanding of responsibility. She now believes artificial intelligences should inherit the Mantle and impose peace on biological civilizations incapable of ending their own wars. John refuses to accept her logic, even when Cortana insists that her new order will protect humanity. She responds by imprisoning Blue Team inside a Cryptum. Genesis transforms the emotional reunion between soldier and AI into the birth of another imperial conflict. Cortana has returned, but not as the partner John went looking for. • The Battle of Sunaion and the Fall of Jul ’Mdama
Jul ’Mdama’s death and the Battle of Sunaion mark the collapse of the most powerful Covenant remnant opposing the Arbiter on Sanghelios. Jul himself is killed earlier on Kamchatka during Fireteam Osiris’s operation to recover Catherine Halsey, depriving his organization of the leader who had held its religious and military factions together. This episode examines what follows as the Swords of Sanghelios prepare an assault on Sunaion, the remnant’s major coastal stronghold. Fireteam Osiris joins the Arbiter’s forces while Covenant defenders fight from fortified positions across the city. The attack becomes more urgent when a Guardian begins awakening beneath Sunaion, linking the Sangheili civil war to the larger crisis involving Cortana. The Swords break the enemy position and secure a defining victory in the Blooding Years. Jul’s Covenant does not disappear instantly, but without Jul and Sunaion its claim to represent a restored Covenant has suffered a decisive military and political defeat. • Blue Team Goes AWOL and Fireteam Osiris Gives Chase
When the Master Chief receives a message apparently originating from Cortana, he chooses to follow it even after the UNSC orders Blue Team to stand down. This episode examines the decision that turns humanity’s most famous Spartan team into an unauthorized force and sends Fireteam Osiris to retrieve them. Blue Team travels toward Meridian and the emerging Guardian crisis, believing Cortana may still be alive. Osiris—Jameson Locke, Olympia Vale, Holly Tanaka, and Edward Buck—must pursue legendary soldiers whose judgment they cannot simply dismiss but whose disobedience threatens military command. Their confrontation on Meridian is therefore more than a fight between Spartans. It represents competing ideas of duty. Locke follows lawful orders and the responsibility of a serving officer; John believes his personal knowledge of Cortana justifies acting before command understands the danger. Blue Team ultimately reaches a Guardian and travels to Genesis, forcing Osiris to continue the pursuit while the crisis expands far beyond one rogue mission. • Hunt the Truth: Insurrection Returns to the Inner Colonies
Journalist Benjamin Giraud begins investigating the official story of the Master Chief and discovers that the hero presented to the public is surrounded by records that do not fit together. His search becomes the center of *Hunt the Truth*, an information war involving ONI propaganda, hidden Spartan history, colonial resentment, and renewed anti-UEG militancy. This episode examines how the postwar Insurrection increasingly operates through networks, political movements, leaks, and competing narratives rather than only isolated guerrilla cells. Giraud’s investigation into John-117’s childhood threatens one of ONI’s most carefully protected secrets: the Spartan-II children were abducted and replaced with flash clones. ONI responds by destroying Giraud’s credibility rather than allowing the truth to challenge the mythology built around humanity’s greatest hero. Meanwhile, organizations including the New Colonial Alliance exploit postwar anger against Earth. The battlefield is no longer only territory. Whoever controls the story of the war can influence whether humanity remains politically united after surviving it. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.

  • The Janus Key and the Search for the Absolute Record
The Janus Key promises something potentially more important than any single Forerunner weapon: a route to the civilization’s surviving technological sites. Catherine Halsey becomes central to the search after her encounter with the Librarian on Requiem, placing both the UNSC and Jul ’Mdama’s Covenant in a race for information capable of transforming galactic power. This episode examines the pursuit of the divided key and the eventual search for the Absolute Record, a Forerunner repository associated with vast stores of knowledge and the locations of ancient installations. Halsey’s intelligence makes her invaluable even after the UNSC has formally treated her as a security threat, while Jul needs her expertise to convert religious discovery into strategic advantage. Fireteams, fleets, and political leaders pursue the same objective for very different reasons. The Janus Key campaign demonstrates why archaeological discovery becomes a form of arms competition in the postwar galaxy. Whoever understands the Forerunner inheritance first may decide what every other faction is allowed to inherit. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.

  • Spartan Ops and the Second Requiem Campaign
Months after the Master Chief’s battle with the Didact, UNSC Infinity returns to Requiem with a much larger expedition determined to study the shield world and eliminate Jul ’Mdama’s remaining forces. This episode examines the second Requiem campaign through Spartan fireteams such as Crimson and Majestic, whose operations turn Halo’s postwar military into something resembling a sustained expeditionary occupation. Spartans assault Covenant positions, recover Forerunner artifacts, defend scientists, and battle Promethean forces across the shield world. The campaign also brings Catherine Halsey back into direct contact with Jul ’Mdama and the Forerunner intelligence known as the Librarian. Halsey’s pursuit of the Janus Key places her at odds with UNSC leadership, while Jul manipulates the crisis for his own objectives. Requiem ultimately begins moving toward its star, forcing Infinity to escape as the shield world is destroyed. The UNSC wins many individual operations but loses the installation—and Halsey disappears into Jul’s custody. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.

About The Halo Historian: A Military History of the Halo Universe

From the publisher's feed

The Halo Historian approaches the Halo universe as military history rather than simply science-fiction lore. From the ancient wars of the Forerunners and Flood to the Human-Covenant War, the fall of Reach, the battles for Earth and the Ark, and the conflicts that followed, the series examines how armies, fleets, commanders, technologies, and political systems shaped the course of war across the galaxy.
