When I first got into hardcore I witnessed some pretty wild events. There were fights with skinheads, suburban dudes acting as "crews," countless stage dives, a full scale riot, black eyes, a broken n... more

September 04, 2021Episode 40- Chris Nguyen (Borrowed Time)I've known Chris Nguyen for 15 years or so. I'd say probably 75% of the times I have run into him has been at a show Borrowed Time was playing. When I first heard he was their new vocalist, I thought that there is really no better person to join that band. As you will learn from the interview, Chris had been a vocalist in a handful of local bands in the early to mid 2000s. He was always a big supporter of Borrowed Time so it really made sense that he would join their band eventually. Chris's first show with the band is Sunday September 5 at Photo City at the Hayward Family memorial. If you happen to listen to this episode after that, they will also be playing again in Rochester Montage Music Hall on October 25 with Slapshot and Sheer Terror....more1h 5minPlay
September 02, 2021Episode 39: Will Carroll (National Teen Set Outsider)One thing I have always loved about punk and hardcore is all of the combinations of different characters you will find. Will Carroll is definitely one of the more unique individuals I have come across in this scene. To say that Will is involved in a lot of projects currently would be an understatement. Everything all started with his National Teenset Outsider Zine and 45 Kid Comic. From there, he has branched that out to a Radio show on Sunday nights on WAYOFM radio. In addition to that, he just started doing a late night show for Photo City Music Hall aptly titled Photo City Tonight. Will also is currently working with XPW Wrestling as well. Mainly why I wanted to have Will on now though was to talk about the Annual Punx Picnic happening this weekend at Genesse Valley Park. The show will be going on all day Sunday. Will talks about the bands playing as well as a few wild ideas to keep the show entertaining. To find more information about all of the many projects Will is involved you can visit his linktree below. https://linktr.ee/Nationalteenset...more1h 8minPlay
September 02, 2021Episode 38- Aidan Monahan and Jim Byrne (Borrowed Time and Something Sacred)When I first started this podcast, I made a pretty big list of people I wanted to interview eventually. Aidan Monahan was one of the first names I wrote down. Originally born in Ireland and having lived on both the east and west coast, Aidan has definitely lived a nomadic lifestyle. We touch on all of the different places he has lived as well as the bands he has been in. Because Aidan mentioned having a bad memory and they were in both bands together, we figured it would be great to have our buddy Jim Byrne back on the podcast. While a couple of these stories were told by Jim and Brendan last year, it is cool to get Aidan's perspective. A lot of the conversation focuses on Borrowed Time and some of their experiences in Europe. Jim will be back on the podcast in a month or two to discuss our favorite breakdowns. Aidan is a tattoo artist currently based out of San Diego, California. You can find more information about his work at https://aidanmonahanart.com...more1h 31minPlay
August 28, 2021Episode 37 (Building on Fire Part 1)If you have listened to at least a few episodes of this podcast, you have probably heard more than a few references to a Standfast/Building on Fire tour I helped book and tried go on as a roadie in the Summer of 2001. Due to a lot of bad luck, Building on Fire ended up completing that tour separately. While the tour clearly isn't looked at as a success by any means there are still plenty of interesting (and often times funny) moments to discuss. We also took a look at the first album that Building on Fire released on Hex Records. Towards the end of the conversation, we also realized that there is plenty of more to talk about regarding the history of Building on Fire. There will be a part two later this year. We will discuss more of the band's recorded output as well as some more successful tours they went on. Before you watch this episode I strongly recommend watching the Building on Fire tour documentary that Matt (Building on Fire bassist) made for his senior project for RIT after this tour. That link is below, as well as links to find Building on Fire music. https://youtu.be/7ibwKM_LVvk https://hexrecords.bandcamp.com/album/building-on-fire-blueprint-for-a-space-romance https://kunaki.com/msales.asp?PublisherId=135878...more1h 33minPlay
August 26, 2021Episode 36: Benny Beyond (Like Wolves, I Object, Destrux, Green Dreams)Anyone who has listened to a few episodes of this podcast is probably already aware that I love hardcore, punk, and hip hop. I'll jump at any chance I get to discuss all of these topics in one conversation. Benny Beyond got his start in the Rochester music scene performing in bands like Destrux and I object. Fast forward a few years and Benny was then singing for Like Wolves, one of the more beloved Rochester bands of the last 20 years. About ten years ago when Like Wolves was starting to slow down, Benny told me had taken an interest in rapping and would be recording some tracks. That was one of those full circle moments for me. Anyway, our conversation touches on all of these musical projects, as well as a few other projects Benny has been involved with over the years. We also discuss current events, fatherhood, Rochester Hardcore, and hip hop....more1h 51minPlay
August 20, 2021Episode 35: Matt VSE (Only Shallow, New Ethic Pizzeria)Back on episode 7 I did a feature on local small business owners. I didn't talk politics or social issues with the guests on that episode. Immediately after it aired, Black Lives Matter started receiving a lot of attention intentionally again. For a few weeks late last Summer, if felt like Rochester was one of the hubs for activism. Matt and I were both present for many of these protests so I felt it was important to have him back on to get his take on a lot of these pertinent issues. In addition to that, we talked about hardcore, straight edge, parenting, as well as plenty more. You can tell that Matt is very passionate about these subjects. He even had a list prepared at the end of our discussion of bands, record labels, and fanzines for people to check out. Make sure you listen to the whole discussion so you can get exposed to some new bands. On this episode we also discuss his bands (Can I Say, Dead Hearts, Old Ghosts), the record label he co-owns (Press Gang Records), as well as The Nickel City Scene Podcast that he is a part of. He also ran Surprise Attack Records and Distro (SA Mob) at that time. Since then, he has played bass in Stretch Armstrong, Empty Promises, and Smoke and Mirrors. June 26, 2021Episode 32- Jared Johnson (Sore Ear Collective, Troubleshooter)One of my favorite aspects of hardcore and punk is all of the different elements of DIY you can become immersed in. My guest on this episode has been in bands, books shows, toured with bands, and he also currently runs a pretty cool record label. I'm talking about Jared Johnson from Sore Ear Collective. Throughout our conversation we discussed his many adventures in our subculture as well as what's to come for his record label as well as his bands....more1h 46minPlay
April 16, 2021Episode 31- Paul and Dean from The Weight We CarryOn this episode I had the pleasure of catching up with Paul and Dean from The Weight We Carry. They have both been active members of the Rochester Hardcore scene for 20 years and have played in a few other bands. I talked with Dean about Dawn of War and Paul about Home Pharmacy, Japanese Kombat Car, and Neon King Kong.
