Listen Later

Welcome to the 2nd Episode in 2024.  In this Episode, Dr BB shares the disturbing findings of

  • Australia is failing to meet the UN's prohibition on violence against children.
  • All states and territories have failed to outlaw corporal punishment against children.
  • Researchers say there is no evidence that corporal punishment improves behaviour.

Dr BB defines corporal punishment is the use of physical force or physical pain as a means of disciplining or correcting the behavior of a person, especially a child.  (The focus of this Episode is on the pratice of corporal punishment against children. )

It involves intentionally inflicting discomfort or pain, typically through actions such as spanking, slapping, kicking or hitting, with the intention of modifying the individual's behavior.

Dr BB further provides a comprehensive understanding of the short-term and long-term effects of corporal punishment, and she suggests alternative disciplinary strategies.

She illustrates, the meta-analysis by Gershoff and Grogan-Kaylor (2016), on the short-term effects of corporal punishment practised on children, and the second longitudinal study exemplified by Afifi (2019).
