Tips on things to do if you have experienced domestic violence in your relationship
Do not alert the abuser that you are planning to leave.
Create a safety plan.
Join a support group. Even if you aren’t ready to leave yet it can help if you have access to a group of people who have left. Many of these groups are anonymous.
Always call 911 in an emergency.
Safety Plan:
Be aware of the sort of behavior that precedes an attack.
Decide on some safe place you can go. This might include a shelter, a friend's home, family home, hotel, or another place in which you feel safe.
Decide how you will get to that safe place.
Keep some money and a set of extra keys with you and some with your family and/or friends, so you can leave.
Decide how you may escape from your home if an attack is imminent.
Memorize important numbers.
