Kriss is joined by Joi to review, The Hate U Give which is based off of a young adult novel by the same name written by Angie Thomas. The film is directed by George Tillman Jr and stars Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall and Russell Hornsby.
Now films based off of young adult novels don't have the best track record. Matter of fact, most are lazy and just downright awful. The Hate U Give isn't one of those films. It tackles some serious issues in the age of protests against police violence and Black Lives Matters and doesn't shy away from treating its target audiences as mature young adults. Add in an absolutely outstanding performance by Russell Hornsby and this is a film you're definitely going to want to check out.
Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right.
