In 1931, what should have been a massive infrastructure project in southern West Virginia became one of the worst industrial disasters in American history. Over 700 workers, many young Black men and migrant laborers, died from silicosis after drilling through pure quartz rock with no protective equipment during construction of the Hawks Nest Tunnel.
Labor attorney Sam Petsonk joins me in the studio to lay bare not just this heartbreaking history, but the ongoing modern silicosis crisis that continues to claim thousands of lives each year.
