HAPPY PRIDE ladies, welcome to class! (This was recorded in May and we don't talk about pride today but DON'T WORRY!! Next week will be pride central.)

This week we're discussing Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), exploring its symptoms, personal experiences, and the scientific understanding of its impact on women's mental health.

Think neurobiology and brain dynamics, but explained in a way that makes sense. If this stuff interests you, definitely get out your notebook for this one!

Because we all know that women's health is dangerously under-researched, but we're absolutely going to dive into the little research that does exist.

Tune in to learn about the emotional and psychological challenges faced by women with PMDD, the importance of tracking symptoms for diagnosis, and the preliminary research into the neurological aspects of the disorder.

Our discussion highlights findings from various studies that reveal how PMDD affects emotional responses, brain activity, and personality traits. Early research suggests the cerebellum plays an interesting role. Along with a few other structures, we're beginning to highlight the neurobiological underpinnings of PMDD, reinforcing the reality of women's experiences and the need for further research in this area.

Of course we don't leave you with all the info and no practical steps. We provide a few different avenues to explore, but it all starts with tracking your own symptoms with the DRSP.

Today's episode begins a little heavy. As much as we're sick of the politics, these are extremely important things to discuss because they affect all of us.

Class today delves into the complexities of women's health, particularly in the context of politics surrounding reproductive rights. We highlight the case of Adriana Smith, a woman who is brain dead but being kept alive due to abortion laws, raising ethical concerns about said laws, the treatment of women in healthcare, and historical atrocities faced by Black women in medicine.

We also share personal experiences regarding sexual health, including navigating healthcare in foreign countries and the stigmas associated with STIs.

Willful modulation of brain activity in disorders of consciousness
To clarify, the majority of patients did not show any willful modulation (aka ability to hear and mentally act on commands given to seemingly unconscious patients). Our point is simply that brain death is a completely different diagnosis from which one cannot recover. It is both medically and legally considered death. Before modern technology, "brain death" did not exist. It is only possible via ventilators.
