Project managers are present in nearly any industry you can think of. In healthcare IT, the role is playing a vital part in implementing technology solutions to answer healthcare's most important questions.

Professionals in this area oversee healthcare technology projects throughout their life cycle, while also monitoring and reporting on progress and obstacles throughout the process. It's one of the most prominent and coveted business skills of recent years due to the project manager's ability to manage cost and risk while improving outcomes.  According to the Project Management Institute, the U.S. healthcare sector will see the biggest increase of project oriented careers of any industry with 17% job growth through 2027. 

To take a closer look at the role of project manager, we spoke with Caroline Saavedra, a project manager at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL and a graduate of USF Health Online's Master of Science in Health Informatics program.

Large scale data collections are available to academics and medical researchers, but who participates and who has access is often up to a coordinating entity that owns the data. The All of Us research program is an effort from the Precision Medicine Initiative that aims to change this.

With a goal to collect data from more than one million voluntary participants, All of Us will serve as a public data repository for everyone from educators to medical researchers that will provide data from all populations, including healthy people and populations that have typically been overlooked in clinical trials and medical research efforts.

In this episode, we'll take a closer look at All of Us through discussion with one of its data curation leads, Dr. Robert Carroll of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. We also talk to USF Health's Director of Informatics and Analytics programs, Dr. Athanasios Tsalatsanis, following his attendance at a conference for the American Medical Informatics Association, where All of Us was a big topic of discussion.

The HIMSS Global Conference and Expo is the premiere conference in the world of health IT, gathering more than 45,000 attendees from around the world to examine everything from the latest tech developments to healthcare policy and philosophy. We take a look at what you can expect from a HIMSS show and look ahead to HIMSS19 in Orlando.
