  • Cell Signaling, Mitochondria & the Foundation of Cellular Health with Dr. Gus Vickery
Cell Signaling, Mitochondria & the Foundation of Cellular Health with Dr. Gus Vickery

What if the reason you feel tired, foggy, inflamed, or simply not quite like yourself begins much deeper than you think—at the level of your cells?

In this episode of The Healthy CEO, Jason Wright welcomes back physician and Authentic Health co-founder Dr. Gus Vickery for a deep dive into one of the most fundamental—and often overlooked—components of health: cell signaling.

Our cells aren't isolated little machines. They're constantly communicating with one another, responding to nutrients, hormones, inflammation, stress, toxins, the nervous system, and even our thoughts and environment. When those signals are clear and the cellular machinery is functioning properly, the body can adapt and perform remarkably well.

But when those signaling pathways become disrupted, the effects can show up everywhere.

Dr. Vickery explains how impaired cellular function can manifest as fatigue, brain fog, inflammation, anxiety, poor sleep, reduced cognitive performance, aches and pains, and diminished energy—sometimes long before someone develops a diagnosable disease.

Jason and Gus also explore the crucial role of the mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside our cells. Using the analogy of a car and its engine, they break down why mitochondrial efficiency isn't simply about producing more energy. The health and integrity of mitochondrial membranes can profoundly influence how effectively that energy-production system operates.

The conversation then moves to another overlooked part of cellular health: the cell membrane.

Rather than simply being a protective wall around a cell, the membrane is an active participant in communication and signaling. Its composition—including omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and other nutrients—can influence membrane fluidity, inflammatory signaling and cellular function.

Dr. Vickery explains how testing can reveal imbalances in membrane composition, including low omega-3 levels, elevated saturated fats and deficiencies in important phospholipids. He also discusses why lifestyle and environmental factors appear to play such an important role in mitochondrial dysfunction, even when genetics influence an individual's underlying resilience.

The episode concludes with the origin story behind Authentic Health's F2 formulation. Gus explains how years of clinical experience led him from simply supplementing omega-3s to thinking more comprehensively about phospholipids, fat-soluble nutrients, CoQ10 and the other components necessary to support membrane and mitochondrial health.

The result was an attempt to simplify what had previously required numerous individual supplements into a more integrated foundational approach.

    In This Episode
    • What cell signaling actually means and why it matters
    • How cells communicate within tissues and throughout the body
    • Why disrupted signaling may appear as fatigue, brain fog, inflammation and poor mood
    • The difference between dysfunction and disease
    • Why mitochondrial dysfunction can occur before diagnosable disease
    • The "car engine" analogy for understanding mitochondrial health
    • Why mitochondrial membranes are critical to energy production
    • How damaged or dysfunctional membranes may reduce mitochondrial efficiency
    • Why the cell membrane is much more than a protective shell
    • Understanding membrane fluidity
    • The role of omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA
    • Why phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine matter
    • How saturated fats and fatty-acid composition affect membrane structure
    • Genetics vs. lifestyle in mitochondrial dysfunction
    • How Dr. Vickery evaluates mitochondrial and cellular health
    • The difference between conventional primary care and a more integrative diagnostic approach
    • Why nutrient insufficiency can exist even before obvious deficiency or disease
    • The importance of reducing harmful exposures while restoring essential nutrients
    • How Gus's clinical protocol evolved into the F2 essential fats formulation
    • Why rebuilding cellular and mitochondrial health should be viewed as a long-term process rather than a quick fix

    Key Takeaway

Health doesn't begin with treating disease. It begins with giving the body what it needs to communicate, produce energy, repair itself and adapt appropriately.

As Dr. Vickery explains, dysfunction can exist long before a physician can put a diagnostic label on it. Addressing foundational cellular health earlier may offer an opportunity to support better function before dysfunction becomes more deeply established.

And that means thinking beyond symptoms and asking a more fundamental question:

What do my cells actually need to function the way they were designed to function?

    About Dr. Gus Vickery

Dr. Gus Vickery is a physician with decades of clinical experience whose work has evolved from traditional primary care toward an integrative, precision-health approach focused on understanding and addressing the underlying drivers of dysfunction.

His clinical experience and research into nutrient status, mitochondrial biology and cellular membrane health also informed the development of the Authentic Health foundational formulations discussed in this episode.

  • Greasing the Groove: The Smarter Way to Build Strength as You Age
Greasing the Groove: The Smarter Way to Build Strength as You Age

What if getting stronger didn’t require crushing yourself in the gym?

In this episode of The Healthy CEO, Jason Wright kicks off a new series on strength, muscle, and longevity by exploring one of the most practical strength-training concepts he’s encountered: “Greasing the Groove,” popularized by legendary strength coach Pavel Tsatsouline.

As we age, maintaining strength and lean muscle becomes increasingly important—not simply for how we look, but for how well we function. Muscle supports metabolic health, physical resilience, mobility, and our ability to continue doing the things we love as we get older.

But building strength doesn’t necessarily mean training to exhaustion.

Pavel’s Greasing the Groove philosophy approaches strength differently: treat strength like a skill and practice it frequently without exhausting yourself.

Jason breaks down the philosophy before sharing Pavel’s explanation of why frequent, high-quality repetitions can train the nervous system to become more efficient at producing strength.

    In This Episode
    • Why strength training should be a cornerstone of longevity
    • The importance of maintaining lean muscle as we age
    • Why Jason is placing a greater emphasis on building strength
    • Pavel Tsatsouline’s philosophy of simply getting stronger
    • What “Greasing the Groove” actually means
    • Why strength can be viewed as a skill
    • The difference between spaced practice and cramming
    • How repeated practice strengthens the neural pathways between the brain and muscles
    • Why you don't need to train to failure to get stronger
    • Pavel’s concept of using a weight that is “heavy enough to respect and light enough not to fear”
    • Why Greasing the Groove typically uses only about half the repetitions you could perform
    • How frequent, non-exhaustive strength work can accumulate significant training volume
    • Why staying fresh may allow you to practice strength more frequently
    • How to incorporate Greasing the Groove into a normal day
    • Why Pavel recommends significant rest between sets
    • The relationship between strength, practice, skill acquisition, and neurological adaptation
    • Why the goal is the perfect rep, not simply more reps

The Basic Greasing the Groove Concept

Rather than performing a traditional workout where you exhaust a muscle group, Greasing the Groove emphasizes practicing a strength movement repeatedly while remaining relatively fresh.

Pavel describes a general approach of:

    Moderately heavy weight.

    Low repetitions.

    High-quality reps.

    Long rest periods.

    Frequent practice.

    Avoiding exhaustion.

The objective is to repeatedly practice the movement so the nervous system becomes increasingly efficient at producing it.

In Pavel's words, you're essentially “greasing” the neurological groove between your brain and your muscles.

Over time, the same movement can require less effort—or you can apply greater force and become stronger.

    A Practical Example

If you could perform approximately eight maximum reps with a given weight, a Greasing the Groove approach might have you perform only three or four high-quality repetitions.

    Then you stop.

    You rest.

And later, you practice the movement again.

    Instead of asking:

    “How hard can I train?”

    The better question becomes:

“How frequently can I practice strength while still staying fresh?”

That subtle change in thinking is what makes Greasing the Groove such an interesting approach to building sustainable strength.

    Jason's Takeaway

As we get older, strength becomes increasingly valuable.

This isn't about chasing a bodybuilding physique or spending your life in the gym. It's about creating a body capable of supporting the life you want to live.

Jason is experimenting with new ways to increase his own strength and lean body mass, and this episode begins a larger Healthy CEO series exploring the training methods, tools, and strategies that can help us remain strong and capable as we age.

    The message is simple:

Get stronger. Stay strong. And practice strength for life.

  • The Root Cause of Addiction & the Path to Your Authentic Self | Pax Prentiss
The Root Cause of Addiction & the Path to Your Authentic Self | Pax Prentiss

What if addiction isn't the problem itself—but a symptom of something deeper?

On this episode of The Healthy CEO, Jason Wright sits down with Pax Prentiss, co-founder and CEO of Passages Malibu and co-author of The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure.

Pax's story is extraordinary. After struggling with heroin, cocaine, and alcohol addiction for nearly a decade, repeated attempts at traditional treatment failed to produce lasting sobriety. Eventually, Pax and his father began asking a different question:

Why was he using in the first place?

    That question changed everything.

Rather than focusing exclusively on managing addiction, Pax began addressing the underlying issues driving his substance use. That experience eventually became the foundation for Passages Malibu and its individualized, holistic approach to treatment.

Jason and Pax explore addiction, recovery, mental health, family dynamics, physical wellness, and the growing normalization of substances in American culture. But the conversation ultimately becomes something even bigger: How do we stop escaping from our lives and become the healthiest, most authentic versions of ourselves?

    In This Episode

    Jason and Pax discuss:

    • Pax's personal journey from heroin addiction to more than two decades of sobriety
    • The question his father asked that changed his recovery: "Why do you think you're using?"
    • Why Pax believes addiction can be a symptom of deeper underlying conditions
    • Depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, insecurity, low self-esteem, and other factors that can contribute to substance use
    • Why treating the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—is central to the Passages philosophy
    • How individualized therapy differs from traditional group-based treatment
    • Why escaping uncomfortable emotions can prevent real healing
    • The importance of confronting problems rather than continually numbing them
    • Marijuana, today's higher-potency products, and Pax's concerns about normalization of recreational drug use
    • Ketamine therapy and the addiction cases Pax says he is increasingly encountering
    • Psychedelic-assisted approaches to trauma and why Pax personally favors clear-headed, individualized therapy
    • How families can recognize when helping has crossed the line into enabling
    • When families should consider working with a professional interventionist
    • Why recovery doesn't end when someone leaves a treatment center
    • The importance of aftercare and creating a healthy home environment
    • Why family members may need to change their own relationship with alcohol when someone returns from treatment
    • The example parents set for their children around drinking, marijuana, and other substances
    • Why Jason and Pax both believe an alcohol-free lifestyle can be transformative
    • Sleep, nutrition, exercise, mental clarity, and their role in rebuilding a healthy life
    • Identity-based habits and becoming the person you actually want to be
    • Why recovery isn't about creating a new person—it's about rediscovering the person underneath the addiction

The Bigger Idea: Becoming Your Authentic Self

One of the most powerful themes of the conversation is that recovery isn't simply about removing drugs or alcohol.

    It's about rebuilding a life.

Pax describes a whole-person approach that addresses psychological, physical, relational, and spiritual health. The objective isn't simply sobriety. It's helping someone rediscover who they are without the substance—and begin moving toward the healthiest version of that person.

Jason connects this philosophy to his own pursuit of health and personal development: the idea that genuine wellness can't be one-dimensional.

    Physical health matters.

    Mental clarity matters.

    Relationships matter.

    Purpose matters.

    Spiritual health matters.

And the environments and habits we build around ourselves matter.

Ultimately, the goal is not perfection.

It's continuing to move toward your authentic self.

    About Pax Prentiss

Pax Prentiss is the co-founder and CEO of Passages Malibu. His own experience with addiction and recovery inspired the creation of an individualized treatment model focused on identifying and addressing underlying conditions associated with substance use.

Passages opened in 2001 and uses a multidisciplinary approach involving medical, clinical, therapeutic, physical, and spiritual components of recovery.

Pax is also the co-author of The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure and says Passages has helped more than 40,000 people pursue sobriety and recovery.

    Need Help?

Pax personally continues to speak with individuals and families seeking treatment and takes admission calls for Passages.

    Passages Admissions: 310-589-2880

Passages operates locations in Malibu and Ventura, California. Pax explains in the episode that the Ventura location works in-network with many insurance plans, while insurance may also contribute toward treatment at the Malibu location.

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use, seek qualified professional help. Treatment decisions should be made with appropriate medical and mental-health professionals.

    Authentic Health

Recovery and long-term wellness involve more than removing unhealthy behaviors. Nutrition, sleep, movement, and providing the body with the nutrients it needs are all part of creating an environment where better health is possible.

30 Grams of Protein at Breakfast: The Simple Habit for Metabolism, Muscle, and Longevity In this Healthy CEO podcast episode, Jason argues that “winning the morning” includes strategically timing nutrition, especially getting at least 30 grams of protein at breakfast, to improve metabolism, body composition, energy, and aging. He challenges the assumption that skipping breakfast or only drinking coffee until noon is always healthier, noting research suggesting how you break a fast affects fat loss, muscle preservation, metabolic health, cognitive performance, and longevity. He explains protein’s benefits—higher thermic effect, better blood sugar stability, and greater satiety—and links muscle to healthy aging, citing age-related muscle loss and the role of mTOR and leucine (about 2.5–3 grams per meal). He gives breakfast protein examples and suggests essential amino acids as a practical option for intermittent fasters to support muscle without a full meal, recommending a one-week experiment. 00:00 Morning Protein Setup 01:02 30g Breakfast Challenge 01:44 Fasting and Metabolism 02:54 Why 30g Works 03:56 Muscle and mTOR 05:05 What 30g Looks Like 05:24 EAAs for Intermittent Fasters 06:57 Longevity and Weekly Experiment 08:10 Wrap Up and Disclaimer

  • Should You Supplement for NAD?

Supplements Aren’t the Answer: Exercise, Blood Work, and the NAD Hype Jason Wright, co-founder and CEO of Authentic Health Partners, explains why he gets frustrated when people ask what supplements to take before addressing basics like exercise, sleep, hydration, diet, stress, and relationships. Using questions about NAD (often via NR/NMN precursors or injections) as the catalyst, he says there’s no panacea and nothing will outperform movement, sunshine, and avoiding over-nourishment; he notes calorie restriction is strongly correlated with longevity in studies but not proven causal. He describes Huberman’s NAD use as anecdotal and cautions against copying a “one person study” without considering the full lifestyle context and overall cellular health.
