This week’s guest is perhaps one of the most knowledgeable American resources for those interested in building with hempcrete; Chris Hertz of LimeWorks in Telford, PA.  Chris is a trained geologist who worked as a mason in the Bucks County area of Pennsylvania before taking up a position at LimeWorks. One of his first tasks was to re-examine and improve upon the formulation of an obscure product line at LimeWorks, their platinum hempcrete binder.  Although Chris knew very little about hempcrete, this task sparked what has become a burning passion for the material and its application.

Chris Hertz is a veritable authority on hempcrete installation and the science behind the key ingredient; the lime based binder.  We have a lengthy discussion with Chris that covers how and why lime-based cements are less carbon positive than the typical portland cement used in modern construction, and how hempcrete can actually be considered carbon negative once installed.  Cameron, Drew, and Chris also touch upon what the limitations of the material are and why it is important to specify a binder that contains no portland cement. LimeWorks’s platinum hempcrete binder also stands apart from those commercially available in Europe in that it is completely sourced from within the state of Pennsylvania, meaning that its application on your project makes your hempcrete even more carbon negative and sustainable.

On this week’s episode we have a conversation with Allan Gandelman of New York Hemp Oil about growing industrial hemp for CBD.  Allan’s journey to industrial hemp began with a love and curiosity for organic farming curated during his time as a high school social studies teacher in the New York public school system.  He observed nutritional deficiencies in what his students were being served for lunch that were difficult for him to ignore.

Allan decided that he could have a greater impact as an organic vegetable farmer and has built a successful business doing so.  Main Street Farms began on a single acre and is now pumping out high quality, organic produce from forty-five acres of open field and an acre of covered greenhouse space, year round!  

The success of Main Street Farms, and his considerable talent for business, served as a springboard for Allan into industrial hemp.  The decision to dive into CBD arose from a personal experience, however, that helped Allan focus his strategy and formulate his commitment to producing a high quality, organic, full spectrum CBD oil.

HEMP TRADERS - LAWRENCE SERBIN

Hemp Traders is the largest wholesale marketplace of hemp textiles in the Western Hemisphere. It was started in 1993 by Lawrence Serbin and has become a great resource for hemp entrepreneurs looking to create their own products out of hemp raw materials ranging from hemp knits, stretch hemp, hemp denim, webbing, twine, to hemp board. Ten years ago Lawrence began developing a product to replace manufactured wood with hemp. After many years working with Chinese manufacturers he has created a non toxic hempboard and with the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill has decided to create his own manufacturing facility in California.

Hemp textiles are one of the strongest natural fibers in the world. Believe it or not, the more you wear hemp the softer it gets. That is it doesn’t wear out. It wears in. Due to its porous nature, hemp clothing breathes so it is cool in warm weather. And guess what? Hemp clothing doesn’t need special care when it's washed.

Hemp grows very fast. It produces 200% more fiber than cotton and 600% more than flax. It sequesters carbon from the air and maintains soil health. It’s been known to be able to remediate toxic soil conditions over time.

Unlike most wood products, Canna Grove’s Hempboard uses a non-formaldehyde binder rendering it toxic free. 80,000 acres of trees disappear everyday and half are used for paper or wood products. Hemp has the ability to limit and ultimately eliminate the ill effects of deforestation by replacing the need to cut down forests.

In 2018, 78,176 acres of hemp were grown in the United States.
