  • 916 Book Reflection - The Hard Things About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz
The Hard Thing About Hard Things By Ben Horowitz This book flection is written and narrated by Leigh Martinuzzi My father once said to me, “Leigh J, life wasn’t meant to be easy!”, or something along those lines. If life was easy, we’d all be living our dream life… the reality is that for many of us, we are not. This book isn’t a book to help us navigate the difficulties of life although I am sure some of the ideas shared are transferable, no, this book is about the complexities and challenges of running a start-up business. Ben Horowitz is considered one of Silicon Valley’s most experienced entrepreneurs and respected by many. I for one have never heard of the guy, and that’s ok, why should I have. According to Wikipedia, Ben is the co-founder along with Marc Andreessen of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and previously co-founded a software company called Opsware. This guy has some experience running business and that becomes clear as daylight as

  • 918 Darren Gold - Master Your Code
Master Your Code: The Art, Wisdom, and Science of Leading an Extraordinary Life As human beings, we’re born with roughly 20,000 genes that fill every cell in our body. This genetic code makes us who we are and guides our behaviour. From the moment we take our very first breath, we’re genetically hardwired to react, avoid risks, and stay safe. Or so we think. What if this is a myth? What if we’re not genetically determined? What if we can erase and replace our internal programming—and master our own code? In this interview with Darren Gold, we discuss how to live an extraordinary life. Guest Bio. Darren Gold is a Managing Partner at The Trium Group ( pronounced TREE um), where he advises and coaches CEOs and leadership teams at many of the world’s most innovative companies, including Roche, Dropbox, Lululemon, Sephora, Cisco, eBay, Activision, and Warner Bros. • 915 Celeste Headlee - Do Nothing!
Do Nothing! In this interview, I speak with Celeste Headlee about efficiency including topics taken from her most recent book Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving. In efforts to scratch her own itch, Celeste began to wonder why despite lots of hard work in efforts to create more happiness was it actually doing the reverse - making us more miserable. Do Nothing isn't' just about doing nothing but rather doing more of what matters. Taking our time back to start living a little more, a little better. This is a very cool and timely conversation and I was left inspired. Guest bio. Celeste Headlee is an award-winning journalist, professional speaker and best-selling author of We Need To Talk: How To Have Conversations That Matter. She is co-host of the new weekly series Retro Report on PBS and season three of the Scene on Radio podcast – MEN. Celeste serves as an advisory board member for Procon.org and The Listen First Project. Her TEDx Talk sharing 10 ways to have a better conversation has over 30 million total views to date. Her most recent book, Do Nothing: How To Break Away From Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving (March 10, 2020), helps us break free of our unhealthy devotion to efficiency, and shows us how to reclaim our time and humanity with a little more leisure.

  • 911 Book Reflection - The End Is Always Near, by Dan Carlin
The End Is Always Near By Dan Carlin This book flection is written and narrated by Leigh Martinuzzi Dan Carlin is the host and creator of the award-winning podcast Hardcore History. It’s a podcast that I have heard many people comment favourably about and on occasions found myself tunning in myself. As the title suggested it is hardcore not only in the history and content that is shared but also most episodes run no less than 3 hours. This book comes off the back of his podcast which I think many fans and publishers have been wanting him to write for some time. It is also very in-depth and what I appreciated was that it was a great deal more digestible as each chapter discusses and shares thoughts on a unique topic. Dan assesses history to better understand the landscape of things today and into the future. Thought-provoking and at times inspiring I find Dan’s curiosity and perspectives shifting the way I previously thought about certain topics and even raising a few new questions that I otherwise wouldn’t have considered. Please enjoy this short review. "Do tough times create tougher people? Can humanity handle the power of its weapons without destroying itself? Will human technology or capabilities ever peak or regress?"
