What happens when the plan falls apart?
Hurricane Lowell recently passed close to Kauaʻi, leaving significant damage across the island. I was working as a firefighter during the storm, while my wife was working at the hospital and our daughters were staying with their grandparents.
Over the next 24 hours, I watched people respond to the exact same pressure in completely different ways.
Some people went straight to work. Some helped complete strangers. Some froze. Some panicked.
And it reinforced a lesson I’ve seen throughout my life in sports, the military, firefighting, coaching, and leadership:
Pressure doesn’t suddenly make you who you need to be. Pressure reveals what you’ve prepared yourself to be.
In this episode, I share what happened during the storm and aftermath, including clearing roads so emergency vehicles could get through, adapting when our own fire engine went out of service, and watching the Kauaʻi community come together to help each other.
I also talk about experiencing Hurricane Georges in Puerto Rico while serving in the military—and the humbling realization that even after seeing firsthand what a major hurricane can do, I still underestimated this one.
We get into preparation, adaptability, purpose, leadership, controlling what you can control, and why experience only matters if you turn it into action.
Most importantly, I explore an idea that applies far beyond sports:
Every one of us is both the head coach and the athlete in our own life.
The head coach in you has to prepare, establish the standard, anticipate problems, and make decisions.
The athlete in you eventually has to execute when life stops cooperating.
Because eventually pressure comes for all of us.
And when it does, you don’t want to start becoming the person you need to be.
You want that person to already be there.
Talent is given. Performance is crafted.

Why do so many men struggle with discipline even when they know what to do?
The answer may be hidden in the language they're using every day.
In this episode of The Highly Effective Man Podcast, JP Bolwahnn sits down with Mark England, creator of Enlifted Coaching, to explore how the words we use — both out loud and internally — shape our identity, behavior, and results.
Mark explains how subtle language patterns like “I’ll try,” “I should,” or “I have to” quietly weaken our mindset and reinforce limiting beliefs.
For men who want to operate with higher standards in their health, leadership, and life, this episode reveals a powerful insight:
Change your language, and you change your identity.
Topics Covered:
• The connection between language and mindset
• Why internal dialogue drives behavior
• How identity is built through the words we use
