THE ROAD TO PATAGONIA. Sixteen years in the making, this adventurelog doc will take your breath away and leave you gasping for more; more life, more adventure, more love as we join with Maddy and Heather as they road-trip from Alaska to Chile. A must see for anyone who equates life with travel.

ITS NEVER OVER JEFF BUCKLEY. Filmmaker and TV Showrunner Amy Berg has crafted an outstanding doc on the life of the legendary musician Jeff Buckley. It is one of the best docs I have ever watched, filling my sometimes running on empty soul with hope, empathy and humility. Should you not know about JB, this tribute to the unique human skillset embodied by his talent and torment will leave you humming hallelujah with angelic tears.

THE ROSES. Another take on Danny Devitto’s take on the hazards of marriage. Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Coleman (and there are many) will certainly appreciate their acting chops and comedic timing as they toss the kitchen sink at the modern irony of “I do”.

OCEAN with David Attenborough.  This is Part One of a three part series in collaboration with the talented gals at EMERGENCE FILMS. Islander Laura Francis, a marine biologist and educator for the past 30 years, has dedicated her professional career to ocean conservation. She worked at NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary for 27 years in education and outreach. Will host post-screening Q&A. Free to the public.

My pair of guests today represent the top end of the social spectrum upon which I am deeply focused. Lucia Vracin and Paula Holmes- Eber are genuinely making a positive statement in a world ruthlessly obsessed with darkness and hatred. Their passionate areas of concern, equal rights, environmental protections, adventure travel and the freedom to do so, strike a sympathetic cord in my belief system, making it a true pleasure to spend an hour exchanging notes and sharing stories of the road. And this is certainly the road less traveled. Lucy is the area representative for WE THE PEOPLE RIDE - COMMON VOTE,  A Minnesota based national grass-roots organization whose tag-line grabs me by the soul like being connected to jumper cables.  “The common good is the alternative to MAGA Trumpism. The powerhouse leader of this righteous rebellion is a pastor named Doug Pagitt. He and crew will be here on Sept 14, to screen their film on an epic bike ride from San Diego to St Augustine, designed to raise awareness of what, exactly, is going on along our Southern border. Paula Holmes-Eber is no stranger to long distance biking, having circumnavigated the GLOBE and authored her book BREATHTAKING, along with her hubby and two daughters to promote, among other altruistic causes, asthma awareness, ecology, social unity and adventure cycling. A Ph.D in anthropology, Paula has just recently stepped down from her presidency of Squeaky Wheels, our very own bicycle advocacy group, who today happens to be sponsoring the joyous Bike for Pie ride on the Island.

MY MOTHER’S WEDDING. Kristin Scott Thomas, a veteran of both sides of the lens, multi-tasks in MMW as the autobiographical writer, director and star, alongside ScarJo and Sienna Miller. No one’s idea of a joke. Except that I can’t help but hearing, “A Navy Officer, Movie Star and Nurse walk into the no-host bar at their Mothers third wedding,” only to find Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Got Married playing on the big-screen TV. Tonally disjointed or perfect pitch? You get to decide. Again.

ROAD TO PATAGONIA: Based on my pithy review above, one would immediately think that throwing the kitchen sink at a script would increase its odds of success. And sometimes it does. This is one. As in, what could possibly go wrong with a West Coast motorcycle-surfing sojourn from Alaska to Patagonia? Ask not then, what could go wrong, but what, if one perseveres, could go amazingly, affirmably and absolutely right. Freedom means to keep going, no matter what. Bonus points for filming it.

IT’S NEVER OVER JEFF BUCKLEY. Just do this: Go to Spotify, iTunes or Prime, slap on your best set of headphones (no buds) and listen to Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Written by the great Leonard Cohen, it should elicit emotions you never knew existed inside your soul. JB, died under ‘mysterious circumstances’ in 1997 at age 30. Veteran show runner Amy Berg crafts a fitting tribute to the author of what David Bowie called the best debut album of all time, Grace, by the titular singer and songwriter.

EXIT POLLS. I would very much appreciate your opinion on this matter of programming importance. The three films we screened last week, trying to capture the Zeitgeist of a society in change, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, KEROUAC’S ROAD & EASY RIDER, all underperformed. The myriad reasons as to why, I will render to the following three. Please choose the one that best fits your personal belief.

1) We can watch them at home on a streaming platform.
2) Not compelling enough.
3) It’s the end of summer, we’re BBQing.

KEROAUC’S ROAD: THE BEAT of a NATION.  If pressed to choose the one novel that suggested another route (besides baseball) might be available in my life’s adventure, it would be On The Road. The peripatetic Kerouac opened more doors to America’s youth of the 60’s than Huxley, Casteneda and Alan Watts combined. He also introduced us to Neal Cassady, the counterculture, double-clutch Jack of all Trades.

MY MOTHERS WEDDING. Three sisters return to their home for the third wedding of their twice-widowed mother. But the mother and daughters are forced to revisit the past and confront the future, with help from a colorful group of unexpected wedding guests. Directed by Kristin Scott Thomas and starring Scarlet Johansson.

EASY RIDER. Nicholson plays juiced-up lawyer George Hanson along with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper as they mount Harley V-Twin panheads and ride into the magic and mystery of American Freedom. Because that is what it’s all about, right? Oh, and that soundtrack humms like a 1950 chopped hog in high gear.

DON’T LET’S GO TO THE DOGS TONIGHT. A sprawling tale of clashing cultures set in war-torn South Africa in 1980 as told thru the blue-eyed lens of 8 year old Bobo, magnificently portrayed by Lexi Venter. Embeth Davidtz (remember her from Schindler’s List?) Co-Stars and Directs with delicate but powerful aplomb.

IRISH EVENING. Thursday night will knock your argyles to the floor, guaranteed! Traditional Irish folk music, a trivia contest, $150 gift certificate drawing, special wine offerings, the screening of REBEL WIFE at 7, and Q&A with Writer/Director/Producer Williams Cole. All this for $15. No wonder only a few tickets remain. Doors open at 5.

OH, HI!. The trope of the crazed woman (See: Kathy Bates) holding the poor sap hostage is somehow used as a template for mayhem and humor in a modern setting. I might read Of Human Bondage before the view.

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOOS NEST. Winner of the Big Five in 1975. The opening card on our THREE JACKS annual Labor Day Celebration of Film. You will recall last years GODFATHER FEST. The titular Jack literally swept audiences away from Lowell, MA to Salem, OR with his creation of the Ken Kesey character Randall Patrick McMurphy. Louise Fletcher as Big Nurse won best actor along with Jack. Also Best Picture, Director (Milos Foreman) and Screenwriters Bo Goldman and Lawrence Hauben from Kesey’s second-best novel. Go ahead and ask.

In today’s special event podcast we are honored to have with us Debbie Sonandre of CELTIC CROSSROADS NW AND Eileen O'Grady, producer - and showrunner - for the IRISH EVENING event. THE COMMENTARY.

SORRY, BABY.  Currently resting comfortably with a 7.7 IMDB composite, and a 100 at Christian Science Monitor, Eva Victor’s virgin directorial voyage has the temerity to pair heartbreak with hilarity. Albeit a slow paced semi rom-com drama, its sincerity and honesty win the day. Perhaps, as expected, most male reviews thumbed it down, the females thumbed it up, WAY up. Women are smarter in every way.

DON’T LET’S GO TO THE DOGS TONIGHT. (A colloquialism roughly meaning, Let’s not let it go to the dogs tonight). From the best-selling memoir of the same name by Alexandra Fuller and co-written and Directed by Embeth Davidtz. The film follows  8-year-old Bobo's life on her family's Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) farm during the Bush War's final stages. It explores the family's bond with Africa's land and the war's impact on the region and individuals through Bobo's perspective. I think this one is going to be a sleeper and take home a gold statue or two. 92% debut at RT.

AN IRISH EVENING with REBEL WIFE. Filmmaker Williams Cole (and family) along with CELTIC CROSSROADS NW present an evening of Irish culture on Thu Aug 14. Showrunner Eileen O’Grady (ask her about Mohammed Ali’s DNA) has assembled an outstanding collection of talent sure to please. Doors open at 5, with Zach Tupper and special guest Stephanie Reese providing traditional Irish folk music. THE COMMENTARY.
EDDINGTON. A master class in tension building. What was the last film you saw (in a theatre) where several audible gasps were heard? Dark, black comedy. Is it satire, social commentary, a cautionary tale or Faux News?

THE LAST CLASS. By demand, this is former Secty of Commerce Robert Reich’s last class at Cal Berkeley.  I follow Mr R on BlueSkySocial and he is right every time when it comes to policy, economics, power and greed. A must see for anyone wondering why our economy is so thoroughly befuddling. 

SORRY, BABY. Freshman Eva Victor’s tough and tender journey from sexual assault to her life after it. Everyone has their own timeline when dealing with trauma, and the ways we cope, heal, deal, learn, and maybe even forgive, number as many as fish in the sea. This is one a poignant and profound tale in that ocean of emotion. SNEAK* 

DON’T LET’S GO TO THE DOGS TONIGHT. (A colloquialism roughly meaning, Let’s not let it go to the dogs tonight). From the best-selling memoir of the same name by Alexandra Fuller and co-written and Directed by Embeth Davidtz. The film follows  8-year-old Bobo's life on her family's Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) farm during the Bush War's final stages. It explores the family's bond with Africa's land and the war's impact on the region and individuals through Bobo's POV. 

AN IRISH EVENING with REBEL WIFE. Filmmaker Williams Cole (and family) along with CELTIC CROSSROADS NW present an evening of Irish culture on Thu Aug 14. Showrunner Eileen O’Grady (ask her about Muhammad Ali’s DNA) has assembled an outstanding collection of talent. Doors open at 5, with Zach Tupper and special guest Stephanie Reese providing traditional Irish folk music. A trivia contest with a $150 gift cert from CELTIC CROSSROADS and the Cole’s doc REBEL WIFE screening at 7. Director and friends will host a Q&A after the film. Tickets here.

EDDINGTON. My recollection of May of 2020 isn’t exactly sprinkled with happy dust. Far from it. Several difficult and life changing decisions came from the chaos, anxiety and stress brought about by a global pandemic and a wanna be King showing off his invisible new suit of imported incompetence. Battle lines were drawn, and blood flowed like wine in the streets of Main St USA. And that is where Ari Aster opens this tale of power, fear and ignorance in Eddington, NM. What could possibly go wrong?

SORRY, BABY. Eva Victor knows that when it comes to confronting a difficult subject, language has its limitations but narrative still has unexplored possibilities. If Sorry, Baby has a thesis of its own, it's that pain and healing come in many different forms — our stories should, also.

F1 - THE MOVIE. Only four days left folks. Go and take the young ones to Jurassic World, Superman or The Smurfs at The Pavilion, but see F1 here!  After a full 11 shows over the weekend, I think I am qualified to make an editorial commentary on this one. Is this epic summertime blockbuster, produced by legendary 81 year old Jerry Bruckmister, perfect? No. In the same way that my 2002 film (released on DVD, so actually video) ONE PERFECT RACE, carried the message to triathletes that ‘Since there is no such thing as perfection, let us be pleased with our performance - when appropriate’, so too, does this timeless fable about ‘The Race’ and what it takes (especially for the veteran competitor) to be relevant at Formula One auto racing. From my ‘shit happens’ POV to Director John Kosinski’s ‘We need a miracle’ maguffin, all the elements are in place for drama, spectacle, the night of the dark soul, and the hero’s journey. Toss in Hans Zimmer and Javier Bardem to the Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon star-car, and whoa, buckle up boys and girls. Is the script tight? No. Is the screenplay deep and thought provoking? N2. Is it 2:36 of blazing, high-octane, turbo-charged excitement? Fuck yes it is. Tribal drums and fat Italian tires. Cool, all-good, Sonny Hayes would say.

EDDINGTON. Ari Aster as Darth Vader and Wes Anderson as Luke Filmmaker. The former a dark, bleak, a red-eyed ogre and the other a white (pastel) cloaked light-saber wielding savior of humanity. All of us who traversed the treacherous times of Covid, especially its early and ugly nightmare stage of 2020, can relate to the horror potential that payed out as an insane, corrupt and pathologically dishonest president tried to spin the epidemic as a liberal, Democratic construct. Fauci versus trump if you will. Veteran Aster thespian Jaquin Phoenix as the Sheriff and Pedro Pascal as the liberal mayor provide the fireworks and seemingly endless tension that all feels eerily familiar and altogether frightening. With Emma Stone, of Yorgos Lanthimos fame, as referee. Oh, my. And BTW, I was a fan of Beau. Midsommer and Hereditary.
