On June 28, 1914, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie arrived in Sarajevo for a state visit that would end in bloodshed and redraw the map of Europe. This episode moves beyond the assassination itself to examine the tense, chaotic hours leading up to it. We trace the Archduke’s controversial decision to proceed with the tour despite multiple warnings, the logistical failures of the motorcade route, and the role of local conspirators like Gavrilo Princip. By focusing on the morning of June 28th, we uncover how a series of mundane errors—a wrong turn, a stalled engine, and a misplaced sandwich—created the perfect storm for one of history’s most pivotal moments. We also explore the diplomatic fallout, from Prince Ljubomir Stojanović’s frantic telegram to Berlin to the eventual 'blank check' support from Kaiser Wilhelm II. This story is not just about a gunshot, but about the fragility of empire and the human errors that can trigger global catastrophe.

In 1897, a group of Viennese artists, led by Gustav Klimt, broke away from the conservative Academy to found the Vienna Secession, a movement that would redefine Austrian modernism. This episode traces the Secession's origins in the cultural ferment of fin-de-siècle Vienna, its revolutionary exhibitions, and its masterpiece, Beethovenfries. We explore how Klimt's 'golden phase' emerged from this rebellious milieu, the scandalous murals for the University of Vienna that stirred public outrage, and the lasting impact on the city's artistic identity. Along the way, we meet key figures like Koloman Moser, Joseph Maria Olbrich—architect of the Secession Building with its gilded dome—and critic Hermann Bahr. The episode unpacks the Secessionists' battle against the establishment, their quest for a total work of art, and how their legacy endures in Vienna's museums and galleries today. We also touch on the movement's philosophical undercurrents, from Nietzsche to the cult of art as a spiritual realm.

In May 1955, Austria signed the State Treaty that ended four-power occupation and restored its sovereignty. This episode follows the decade-long negotiation from the Moscow Declaration of 1943 to the final signature at Belvedere Palace. We explore how the Cold War's freeze thawed enough for a neutral Austria to emerge, the roles of Karl Renner, Leopold Figl, and Julius Raab, and the Soviet Union's shifting motives. We also consider the cost: Austria had to pay for its freedom and renounce any future union with Germany. Along the way, we reflect on the irony of a treaty drafted in the very building where the Austrian Republic was proclaimed in 1918. A story of patience, pragmatism, and the small window of possibility that opened after Stalin's death.

Step into the Vienna Prater, where imperial hunting grounds became a public park and the site of the 1873 World's Fair. Lucas and Luna explore how Emperor Joseph II opened the Prater to the public in 1766, turning a Habsburg hunting reserve into a democratic space for all Viennese. They trace the park's evolution through the Congress of Vienna, when it hosted grand festivities, and its transformation into a leisure destination with the iconic Ferris wheel, built for the 1897 Jubilee Exhibition. Along the way, they uncover the Prater's role in the 1873 stock market crash, its wartime history, and its enduring status as Vienna's green heart. A conversation about public space, imperial power, and the everyday lives of Viennese citizens, this episode reveals how a single park reflects two centuries of Austrian history.

The Habsburg Empire didn't just collapse in 1918 — it was dismantled from within, in part by the last man to sit on its throne. This episode unpacks the extraordinary and tragic reign of Emperor Karl I, who inherited a dying empire in 1916 and tried to do the impossible: end the First World War before it ended Austria-Hungary. We follow his secret peace overtures through his brother-in-law, Prince Sixtus of Bourbon-Parma, the explosive scandal of the 'Sixtus Affair' that alienated Germany, and his doomed reform efforts to federalize the empire and give nationalities a voice. Then, the end: the manifesto of October 16, 1918, the dissolution of the dual monarchy, and Karl's two failed attempts to reclaim the Hungarian throne. We close in exile on Madeira, where he died in 1922, poor and largely forgotten — but beatified by the Catholic Church in 2004. A story of good intentions in a time when good intentions were no longer enough.

Beneath the Capuchin Church in Vienna lies the Kapuzinergruft, the final resting place of nearly 150 Habsburgs. In this episode, Lucas and Luna descend into the crypt to trace the rise and fall of the dynasty through its graves. From the ornate sarcophagi of Maria Theresa and Franz Joseph to the simple tomb of the last emperor, Karl I, who died in exile in 1922, the crypt tells a story of power, piety, and decline. Along the way, Lucas explains the famous ceremony of the Hofburg's death rituals, the bizarre heart and entrails burials in separate churches, and the controversy over Empress Elisabeth's 'Sisi' memorial. He also discusses the uneasy legacy of the crypt in republican Austria, where a former imperial family still claims a burial place. This episode offers a unique lens on Habsburg history, one that is both intimate and monumental.
