Bill Masterton's path to the NHL may have been unconventional, but he deserved to be there. He was a member of the inaugural roster of the Minnesota North Stars, and he wouldn't have wanted it any other way. About halfway through the 1967-68 season, Masterton was killed as a result of a collision during a game. In his honor, the NHL constructed, and donated a trophy. The yearly winner needs to possess to perseverance, and dedication to hockey; just as Masterton had possessed.
