  • Fear, Mist, and Monsters - Proverbs: Fear & Purgation

    Class 2

In Proverbs 9:10 we hear that, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." In the Biblical wisdom tradition, the most terrifying thing seems to be chaos--a world that has no meaning and where the good suffer but the bad succeed. But Proverbs shows us that the "fear of God" actually leads us to discern God's order and how we can avoid most chaos by living our values. Activity: VIA Virtues/Strengthsfinder VIA VALUES

    Course Description:

In our lives, we face real fears, pain, and suffering. These things can feel like metaphorical monsters lurking in the shadows and mist of a murky reality. It can seem wherever we turn, there are people who can only seem to offer Hallmark-esque platitudes and even toxic positivity in response to the actual help our souls desire. The Biblical Wisdom tradition takes the opposite approach to pain and suffering. Through Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job (three of the classic Wisdom books in the Bible), we can find a pattern that has been time-tested to help us find deep growth, even when we're facing the things we fear most in this life. Taking an in-depth academic and spiritual approach to these three Book of the Bible, we can learn to grow in wisdom and hope.

  • Fear, Mist, and Monsters - Introduction to Wisdom

    Class 1

What does Biblical wisdom even look like, and how is it a mystical path of spiritual maturation? This class will give us an introduction to both the 3-fold mystical path of the classic Christian tradition and why mystics have been using it to face the "dark night of the soul" for generations. • Pray Like a Cicada

Every year in the summertime, we are greeted by the loud songs of the cicada broods. There's normally about seven different broods at any given time who hatch underground after having lived five years or so underground. For many of the broods, they come up to the surface, they mate, they die. This year, however, we're also being visited by 'Brood 13' and 'Brood 17', and the sound is deafening. This meditation is an understanding of these cicada's prayers as a way of reevaluating our own prayer life. Want to watch the video version of this episode? And to The Rev. Jane Gober who organized this reading and added her voice to the recording session.
