"If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you're already dead! Brothers, what we do in life... echoes in eternity."

Prepare to be entertained as THCC go back to the golden age of the Roman Empire to review Ridley Scott's historical masterpiece Gladiator (2000)!

Starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Pheonix, Connie Nielsen and the great Oliver Reed, Gladiator follows Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who after being betrayed and his family murdered by the usurper Commodus, is sold into slavery as a gladiator. Faced with a new purpose, his vengeance will take him from the deserts of Northern Africa to Rome itself, in the sands and bloodshed of the Colosseum!

Gladiator has been defined as one of the greatest and most significance films of all time; a tale of revenge, corruption and morality that paved the way for the resurgence of the swords-and-sandals subgenre and a revival of contemporary interest in the Ancient World.

In this episode we discuss the historical context of this period, how gladiators were brought to life on the silver screen, historical authenticity and the film's lasting legacy as an historical epic.

It was Easter Sunday, 26th April 1478 and the people of Florence arrived at the Duomo to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus. However within the hustle and bustle and in the eyes of God a shocking and violent act was committed...

The Pazzi Conspiracy has been defined as one of the most significant assassination plots in history, an event which changed Florence and the Italian political landscape overnight.

In this new instalment of our Cases of Conspiracy series, we look back on that fateful day, discussing the causes of the event, its long impacts, the influence of the Italian Renaissance and the role of the Papacy!

'The worst part of having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don't'.

It's time to put on a happy face as THCC review one of the most controversial films of our time, 2019's JOKER!

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as a new rendition of the infamous Clown Prince of Crime, the film follows failed clown and aspiring comedian Arthur Fleck in a decaying 1980s Gotham City, whose descent into mental illness and nihilism sparks a violent revolution against the rich and power.

Since its release, Joker has been the subject of much discussion within contemporary cinema, with debates over its themes, messages and depictions of mental health and violence. Is Arthur a representation of the modern day incel community? Does the film glorify a homicidal maniac? Is this a cautionary tale of society’s perception of those with mental illness?

On this episode we delve into those questions and what Joker is really about, as well as discussing the performances, parallels to other films and how the cinematography illustrates a class divided Gotham City.
