The other week The Hoofbeat Chronicles spent a day at the Spoga Horse trade fair in Cologne, Germany. The other year when the Eventing classes changed and we were introduced to the CCI1*-Intro and CCI5-L* we were told part of it was to streamline the disciplines. However, that is where it ends.

Looking how the show jumping regulations manage to mention prize money more than 100 time vs eventing's 9 time mention in their rules it makes you wonder.

The past months the whole drama around Andreas Helgstrand have not only sparked discussions of animal abuse and the welfare of the horse. It has also rendered a lot of discussion in what is ok to do and what is not ok to do in journalism.

I for one followed a discussion where some people thought Helgstrand for sure should get all access to the material being captured at his farm. I could not disagree more.

Cause even do I am not approving to the current state of equestrian journalism, we do need to protect journalism as a whole, and undercover journalism in particular.

Undercover journalists - as well as ever so often complete private people so called whistle blowers - risk a lot when they go undercover to gather information and evidence about unethical or even illegal activities within an organisation.

In the real world outside world horses and equestrianism, investigative journalists often play a critical role in uncovering corruption, misconduct, or other issues of public interest. Corruption, misconduct and similar also happens in sport so why should the sport being excluded from being scrutinised?
