Episode 3 begins a three-part mini-series looking at the UK energy network and its evolution. In the first episode of the Boudicca series, our resident Systems Integration expert Bridgit Hartland-Johnson explains how the National Grid and UK infrastructure is having to adapt to changing government policy and the ongoing decarbonisation of the UK's energy mix. We go on to discuss how the energy market operates and why change is needed, before looking at some of the challenges involved in accommodating the ever-increasing supply from renewable energy sources like offshore wind.  

The final two parts in the series will focus more on Ørsted and how projects like Hornsea 3 are navigating rapidly changing market forces and grid requirements, with a final in-depth look at Hornsea 3's co-located Battery Energy Storage System with our very own Iceni Package Manager, Beatrice d'Eufemia.

In Episode 2, we join Hornsea 3's stakeholder relations team to look at how Hornsea 3 engages with local communities. 

Building the world's largest single offshore wind farm is one of the UK's most significant National Infrastructure Projects. With 52km of onshore export cables buried beneath the Norfolk countryside and an enormous onshore converter station site just south of Norwich, major civil construction work can be hard to manage in a very rural community.

In addition to mitigating the negative impacts of a project of this scale, we also look at the positive impact Hornsea 3 is having through its £7million Community Benefit Fund, schools and colleges outreach programmes and community events.

In this episode, Luke Bridgman and Phae Pritchard are joined by Sam Downie, Managing Director of 'Mates in Mind', one of the UK's leading mental health charities. 

With extensive experience in the sector and a background in psychology, Sam outlines some of the statistics around mental health in construction and explains how organisations can support their employees and contract partners through a structured programme of research, training, and the establishment of strong internal networks to create a culture where mental health can be discussed openly and honestly without fear or stigma. 

In a wide-ranging discussion, we begin by looking at some of the statistics around mental health, going on to explore how mental health and wellbeing can suffer as a result of post-pandemic work demands and increasing domestic and social pressures, We discuss ways people can develop resilience strategies to help them cope, and the importance of encouraging both self-awareness and a culture where managers and colleagues are helped to spot the early warning signs of colleagues who may be struggling.
