Graeme Lewis continues the CDM series with a look at the Principal Designer role, and why communication, coordination and alignment between interfaces is so critical for a project like Hornsea 3. As well as an exploration of some live aspects of the project where the PD role has come to the fore, we also discuss some of the essential deliverables in terms of the HSE file and why document control, tagging and handover is of fundamental importance for the long-term operation of the asset.

In this episode, we continue the CDM series with a look at what it means to be 'the Client' under the Construction & Design Management Regulations. Graeme Lewis explains what the Client can and can't do, how the interface with the Principal Contractor and Contractors should work both in the pre-construction and construction phase of a project, and what some of the pitfalls can be when things go wrong.

In this episode*, Bridgit is joined by Beatrice d'Eufemia, package manager for the Battery Energy Storage System adjacent to our OnCS.  In the final episode of the Boudicca series, we focus in on the first BESS in Ørsted's history to share a grid connection with an existing generator (Hornsea 3), and the complexities involved from a regulatory, commercial and legal perspective in making that happen. We look at the technology involved, the state of the battery market to date, and why the future may be looking towards longer-term energy storage solutions. Note: this episode was recorded prior to the mothballing of Hornsea 4.

In this episode, we're again joined by energy systems expert Bridgit Hartland-Johnson to discuss the merits of battery energy storage within the UK's energy network infrastructure. We start by turning the clock back to explore how and why Orsted's Battery Energy Storage System was conceived and the implications for Hornsea 3 and its pre-FID business case. Looking more widely, we consider why battery storage is important for the UK, what it can deliver for Orsted, and what the future looks like in terms of the country's overall generation mix.

Episode 3 begins a three-part mini-series looking at the UK energy network and its evolution. In the first episode of the Boudicca series, our resident Systems Integration expert Bridgit Hartland-Johnson explains how the National Grid and UK infrastructure is having to adapt to changing government policy and the ongoing decarbonisation of the UK's energy mix. We go on to discuss how the energy market operates and why change is needed, before looking at some of the challenges involved in accommodating the ever-increasing supply from renewable energy sources like offshore wind.  

The final two parts in the series will focus more on Ørsted and how projects like Hornsea 3 are navigating rapidly changing market forces and grid requirements, with a final in-depth look at Hornsea 3's co-located Battery Energy Storage System with our very own Iceni Package Manager, Beatrice d'Eufemia.

In Episode 2, we join Hornsea 3's stakeholder relations team to look at how Hornsea 3 engages with local communities. 

Building the world's largest single offshore wind farm is one of the UK's most significant National Infrastructure Projects. With 52km of onshore export cables buried beneath the Norfolk countryside and an enormous onshore converter station site just south of Norwich, major civil construction work can be hard to manage in a very rural community.  

In this episode, Imran Nawaz, Lauren Little and Lily Dowe join podcast host Mat Rumbelow to discuss strategies that have helped to offset the impact of construction through carefully organised local consultation and engagement activities. 

In addition to mitigating the negative impacts of a project of this scale, we also look at the positive impact Hornsea 3 is having through its £7million Community Benefit Fund, schools and colleges outreach programmes and community events.
