We love collaboration and organisations trying to help each other for the benefit of horses and riders, so when we got the opportunity to speak to Squadron Leader Kim Leach from RAF Shawbury here in Shropshire, we jumped at the chance. Kim is a huge horse-enthusiast, having ridden since she was 6 years old, so she is perfect for the role of community engagement with local horse-owners and riders around the very busy RAF base of Shawbury in Shropshire, where helicopter pilots from all 3 services receive instruction. In this episode, we find out more about Kim, her riding experiences and how she was hauled in front of her commanding officer for a horse-related "incident" at an RAF base she was on duty at. We also hear about her liaison work with horse-riders. By working with the British Horse Society, RAF Shawbury have developed an award winning campaign to help pilots and riders be as safe as they possibly can be, called "Be Seen Be Safer". The premise of the campaign is to help pilots see horses being ridden from a greater distance, so that they can take the safest action possible to avoid spooking a horse wherever it is possible. For more information you can visit the RAF Shawbury website here and read a guide to low flying safety for horse-riders here.
