This week I sat down to talk with Ali Straub to talk about her experience walking the Camino de Santiago, the Way of Saint James. We also talk about environmental history, nature, and "leave no trace" as we navigate the trail of outdoor history.

Ali Straub is a historian at Temple University who walked from Lugo to Santiago de Compostela in 2010. In this podcast she explains her experience on the Camino and hiking in the United States. She also adds some insights about environmental history.

Poland recently passed a law that made headlines because it threatens three-years of imprisonment for anyone untruthfully accuses Poland of responsibility for Nazi crimes. In response, the government of Israel is considering a law that would make it a crime to ignore Polish participation in the Holocaust.

Beginning December 28 in Mashhad, Iran protesters took to the streets across Iran to call attention to the abuse of power by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini. By the end of the first week in January, the government of Iran jailed hundreds of protesters, some of whom have still not gained freedom.

Although our frenetic new cycle has moved long beyond the protests that occurred nearly a month ago, international demonstrations outside of Iranian embassies and continued discussion about human rights violations persist throughout the world.

In this episode Mathias and I look into the recent protests in Iran.

This week I had a conversation with the Brooklyn-based writer Geoffrey Cobb about his latest work, The Rise and Fall of the Sugar King, A History of Williamsburg Brooklyn 1844-1909.
