This week we have a very special episode with the financial coach Even Steven Money! Around 2011, Steven was in search of a house in Chicago for him and his soon to be wife. He soon realized that why not invest in a multi-family type of property that can potentially generate some income. After making offers on different properties for about a year, Steven finally found a three-unit house. Steven and his wife lived in one of the units while getting renovations done to the other units. After getting renovations and having tenants move in, Steven realized how much money house hacking generated. Steven and his wife decided to take the money they were earning and pay off debts and other payments. This house hack became a huge stepping stone towards his journey in reaching the debt-free and financial freedom community.

This week we are traveling to Providence, Rhode Island to meet Brooke. From living rent-free as a university RA to having to pay $550 a month, she soon realized that she did wanted the rent-free life back. Brooke decided to start looking for houses in the area after she came across the concept of house hacking. Using a conventional loan, Brooke was able to buy a triplex property in a class A neighborhood.

Brooke is now able to free up more money to travel with this small multi-family house hack. Handling multiple tenants can be tough while traveling, but she learned a few tips and tricks. Listen to her story as she explains how she efficiently handles property management while she travels.

This week we have a unique episode that incorporates two different styles of house hacking! Casey and her husband were looking for houses around the suburban area in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. They soon realized that houses were being sold quickly in this strong sellers’ market. Casey decided they have to become very specific about the type of house they wanted.

Casey and her husband finally found a single-family home that they would live in while turning the basement into an income-suite. Their strategy was to use this home as a room rental house hack until renovations allowed them to income-suite house hack. This combination allowed Casey and her husband to significantly cut the mortgage down- essentially freeing up money for renovations! This week, we’re going to tackle another example of the work provided house hacking. Jenni and her husband recently purchased a farm in New York when suddenly they realized the farming experience wasn’t quite what they thought it would be. After searching for another job Jenni, her husband, and their kids found themselves moving to a ranch in Paducah, Texas. While usually the ranch provides housing from a house on the ranch itself, all of the houses were occupied. In lieu, the employer gave Jenni and her family a flat rate housing allowance. Luckily, allowance exceeded their housing costs!

Jenni and her husband were able to still keep the farm in New York and decided to rent it out to a relative. This isn’t your ordinary house hack, but it definitely allowed Jenni and her family to live for free and still have their own property. Talk about financial freedom!

This episode is definitely one for the books! We dive into a couple’s journey to financial independence and the steps that they are taking on the way there. John and Tahseen got married in 2014, and John had this amazing idea of retiring by the age of 40. Tahseen, being the financial expert in the relationship, started to wonder if retiring by 40 was even realistic. Sooner or later, they both came across the amazing concept of house hacking! This made retiring by 40 look more than realistic.

 

Their house hacking started with helping out a college best friend who had a rough housing situation. Moving on to having another person live in their house, they discovered that their mortgage was almost being paid off by other people living there. When they discovered they were house hacking, they couldn’t stop there! So from room rental, John and Tahseen decided to try a small multifamily house hack.
