A Public Affair

The Housing Crisis and Modern-Day Redlining

Listen Later

The U.S. is facing a major affordable housing crisis. Why are rent and mortgage rates soaring? How long is this expected to last? What can be done?
First up today, we get into these questions with emeritus professor Kirk McClure from the Urban Planning Program at the University of Kansas. He talks about homeownership as generational wealth, why rent prices in particular are skyrocketing, and what kinds of policies could receive popular support to address the issue.
Then, Erika Sanders from the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council talks about the racial homeownership gap in Wisconsin, what modern-day redlining looks like, and their recent $4-million settlement with real estate brokerage company Redfin.
