Harrison Browne, former professional hockey player, and Rachel Browne, Harrison's sister and investigative journalist sit down with The Ice Garden's Meredith Foster to talk about their book. Let Us Play: Winning The Battle For Gender Diverse Athletes, publishing on May 27, takes the reader beyond crass sensationalism and into the realities of history, science, and oppression for a thought-provoking and informative look at what equity should look like for athletes of all genders.
Harrison came out as transgender back in 2016 at the start of the second NWHL season. At the time he was a forward for the Buffalo Beauts; he went on to win two Isobel Cup championships, one with the Beauts in 2017 the same season he came out, and a second with the Metropolitan Riveters a year later in 2018. In a special one-off podcast, host Geremy is joined by The Ice Garden NCAA expert writers Giselle, Emma, and Angelica to discuss the recent NCAA National Tournament round by round Giselle, Emma, and Angelica go over the regional semifinals, regional finals, Frozen Four semifinal and of course the big game, the NCAA National Championship game. Mike from The Ice Garden and Eleni, a player agent and partner of Cook Stark Hockey, discuss the far-from-transparent nature of restricted free agency in women's hockey. They dive into how restricted free agency and other contracts might work if there is an expansion draft, and discuss what money is guaranteed when a player signs a standard player agreement (SPA). In other words, what happens when a player who signed a SPA becomes a reserve player?
Checking the Box is co-hosted by player agent and partner of Cook Stark Hockey, Eleni Demestihas and The Ice Garden Managing Editor and owner, Mike Murphy. Checking the Box will be a monthly (roughly) PWHL and pro women's hockey-centric pod offering unique perspectives from behind the glow of a laptop screen and the agent's desk.
