What does it take to run a digital banking platform when fraud tactics change every day? In this episode of ID Talk, hosts Tony Bitzionis and Alex Perala speak with Will Reeves, founder and CEO of Fold, the financial services company behind an app that pays its rewards in bitcoin. Reeves explains how Fold works with partner banks to offer checking accounts, debit and credit cards, bill pay and bitcoin purchases, and why he sees fraud prevention as the deciding factor in whether a fintech survives.

The conversation also covers Fold's move to Persona for identity verification, the pandemic-era wave of fraud aimed at digital banks, and the risk created when every financial institution must collect and store sensitive KYC documents. Reeves discusses how AI is raising the stakes for attackers and defenders alike, why he believes efforts to slow AI development would leave defenders worse off, and the privacy-preserving approaches, such as zero-knowledge proofs and reusable KYC, that he says government officials are beginning to explore. Whatever form it takes, he argues, identity verification "will always need to be here."

What does it take to make a digital ID work in the real world? In this episode of ID Talk, hosts Tony Bitzionis and Alex Perala speak with Calvin Fabre, founder and CEO of Envoc, the Baton Rouge software company that created LA Wallet, Louisiana’s digital driver’s license app. Fabre recounts launching the app in 2018, before the ISO mobile driver’s license standard was released, and explains how police pushback, the pandemic and new state legislation shaped its growth to more than two million users. Envoc divested LA Wallet in December of last year.

The conversation then turns to FaceLock, Envoc’s new identity verification platform, which matches people to their government-issued photo IDs using FaceTec’s 3D liveness technology and binds their credentials to their faces with UR Codes. Fabre discusses the convincing fake IDs and AI-assisted fraud hitting universities and banks, why printed UR Codes can serve people without smartphones, and why letting customers host their own biometric data leaves less to breach. He also previews Envoc’s work on remote liveness checks for call centers, and makes the case that liveness is about to become “the new hotness.”
