Kate Golebiowska is a Polish-born immigrant living in Australia. She moved to Canberra, Australia's capital, in the early 2000s, when she was in her mid-20s, to pursue her PhD in public policy at the Australian National University. She has lived in the Antipodes since that time. Just before receiving her degree, she relocated from Canberra to Darwin, a city in the Australian tropics, where she has worked as an International Migration Researcher and Lecturer at Charles Darwin University. In this episode, we speak with Kate while she is at Emory University in Atlanta on her Fulbright Professional Award (Business/industry). Through her lens we learn about what it was like growing up as a young person in Poland in the 1990s, when the country was undergoing a dramatic transformation from a country being communist and centrally-managed to a market-based economy. We also discussed her aspirations as a young person to experience life abroad and her infectious enthusiasm for learning and making use of foreign languages. Kate also discussed her research of migrant women and micro-enterprises.

Joseph Shaules (PhD) is an author and educator in the field of language and intercultural education. He is a Specially Appointed Professor at Keio University's GIC Center, in Tokyo. He is the director of the Japan Intercultural Institute. He teaches in the Tsuda University Graduate Program in TESOL. He is the creator and host of The Deep Culture Podcast. Books include Transformation, Embodiment and Wellbeing in Foreign Language Education (Bloomsbury); Language, Culture and The Embodied Mind (Springer); The Intercultural Mind (Intercultural Press); The Beginnger's Guide to the Deep Culture Experience (Intercultural Press), and Deep Culture (Multilingual Matters). He has lived for extended periods in Mexico, France and Japan, and is fluent in English, Spanish, Japanese and French.

Part II of Dr. Laman's story

Dr. Glen Laman was born in rural Jamaica in the parish of St. Ann. He attended high school at Kingston College and worked briefly for Reynolds Jamaica Mines. In 1969, he migrated to the USA where he attended Pace University and Brenau University for undergrad and master's degrees respectively.

He has had an extensive career in corporate America as an Information Technology and Business Project Manager, having worked at major corporations such as the Coca-Cola Company, J C Penney and AT&T. Some 40 years after completing his undergraduate degree, he graduated from the University of Management and Technology (UMT) with a doctorate in Business Administration (DBA). He is the author of two books namely, Jamaican Entrepreneurship and The Hero of Fern Gully.

In this episode, we talked about his life journey, exploring his roots in Jamaica and the formative experiences that shaped his perspective. Dr. Glen talked about his educational pursuits and the remarkable story of how he navigated the path to the US, where he would forge a vibrant life and career over the span of more than four decades. He takes us on a global tour, sharing his career adventures that spanned various corners of the world. His academic journey culminated in a remarkable Ph.D. pursuit, where he explored the realm of Jamaican entrepreneurship.

Part 2 of Dr. Elizabeth Nguyen's story.

A rich journey across the Pacific Ocean to find one's true home and identity amidst loss, grief, and mental illness.

Anh Nguyen is 17 years old and a senior in high school working on a watercolor art series when she experiences her first manic episode. She is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, put on medications, and she and her Vietnamese-American family are suddenly thrown into the world of mental health treatment and recovery.

Anh's mother Xuan grapples with understanding her daughter's struggles, while also trying to make sense of her own loss and grief of leaving behind her family and motherland of Vietnam to raise her children in America. The family find refuge across the Pacific Ocean on the warm shores of Honolulu, Hawaii, Anh navigates growing up in a refugee family in a new land and culture, and dealing with the struggles of her own mind. She finds solace in her love for the ocean and her art.

This is the story of finding one's identity and place of belonging in a shifting landscape of tradition, heritage, and culture, and the healing power of art, water, and love.
