The Lord expects us to be constant in prayer and to rejoice and give thanks in everything, and that's only possible when we keep Him first place in our daily lives and talk to Him as the day goes by, either giving thanks or asking for help. It's all a matter of having the right heart attitude; one that keeps us afloat with God, rather than underfoot of the devil. And though it's not always easy to do, the Lord's provided the Holy Spirit to help us do it. But we must listen to and obey the leading of the Holy Spirit if we're to be successful.
