Truth in the natural forms the foundation of spiritual truth. Foundations are the basis from which things develop. They are the anchors which provide support to what is built on them. In the same way, doctrine (i.e., truth in the natural or external truth) is an essential foundation to a man’s spirituality. 

All men are called to be spiritual. This is initiated by the agency of doctrine. Doctrine provides the blueprint to guide men in the spiritual journey. Men must therefore not shun any opportunity to understand the details of doctrine - the effectiveness of the strife for spiritual mastery depends on it.
