Real vampire history is stranger than any novel. For 300 years, on six continents, people opened graves, staked corpses, and burned hearts. Carol Ann digs into the true history and lore of vampires. You'll see the 1725 Serbian report that first put the word "vampire" in print, the New England vampire panic and the exhumation of Mercy Brown, and a 17th-century Polish grave pinned down with a sickle and a padlock. From there it's London's Highgate Vampire hunt and a Romanian village that did it all again in 2004. Then the lore turns somewhere unexpected: blood-drained livestock in Puerto Rico 20 years before the chupacabra, lights over Brazil that locals said drained them, and a figure in the Scottish woods. Folklore, archaeology, and forensic science, plus the reports that still don't fit.

In January 1973, CIA Director Richard Helms gave a verbal order and the MKULTRA files went into an incinerator. Nobody wrote the order down. Four years later, a clerk's unexplained filing decision surfaced seven boxes at a records center outside Washington. Eight thousand pages, all of it accounting. Trolls. Are they real? In 1244, armed men riding across a windswept ridge in Iceland met something in the road that stopped and let them stare, and the account gives us three words in Old Norse: tröll eitt mikit. A great troll. Then it moves on, like a monster in the road was barely worth the ink. In this episode, we follow that single word through 800 years of Nordic folklore, from troll women riding wolves with live snakes for reins, to the hidden families living under Scandinavian farmland, to a modern Icelandic road crew that dug a buried stone back out of the ground. And what we find is that almost everything we picture when we hear the word troll is wrong.

In 1982, a backhoe operator clearing a Florida peat pond pulled up a 7,000-year-old human skull. He had found Windover Bog, and 167 more people were down there with him. Ninety-one of them still had their brains. They belonged to a lost ancient civilization that vanished from Florida with no name, no written language, and no explanation.

The Windover bog bodies were wrapped in hand-woven cloth and staked beneath the water in a burial ritual nobody has ever been able to explain, and half of them are still down there.
