Irish water fairies are not like Tinkerbell; they are monsters.  This episode I share some of my favorites:

Muirdris, the “Sea Bramble” or “Sea Briar” - A huge, mysterious, undefined horror that inflates and deflates, expands and contracts like a bellows. It has features of a thorn-bush, with branches that stings, and its appearance alone is deadly.
Alp-Luachra - In Celtic mythology, a Joint-eateror Just-halver the Alp-luachra is a type of fairy who sits invisibly and consumes half of their victim's food.
Chailleach- The word "Cailleach" literally means "old woman, hag" and comes from the Old Irish word caillech, which means "veiled one".  
The serpent of Loch Chraili - Similarto the Loch Ness monster  
The white trout, the legend of Cong - A woman turned fish pining for her dead fiance 
An Dobharchú  - Translated means ‘water hound’, or ‘hound of deep’. Thought to be a cross between a giant otter and a hound, Dobhar Chu is about seven-foot-long, or about the size of a crocodile. In fact, it is also known as the Irish crocodile.

Bataireacht is a traditional Irish martial art that involves fighting with walking sticks, or shillelaghs, for self-defense and community protection. It originated in the 16th century and was a key part of Ireland's resistance to colonization. 

Bataireacht is a combination of boxing, fencing, and grappling, where fighters use their sticks to punch, strike, and jostle. It was developed as a way to settle disputes and for self-defense in a rural and often lawless Ireland. The practice was almost lost due to the Famine and colonial efforts to eradicate it. 

The Doyle family developed a unique two-handed style of bataireacht known as Rince An Bata Uisce Bheatha and was the first publicly taught in Canada

Many soldiers on both sides of the civil war were Irish Immigrants.  Highly regarded for their skill and courage many were high ranking officers.  After the civil war they wanted to free their country from the shackles of the British empire.  The closest target the British colony in Canada.  

Interestingly, the US government looked the other way at first, since the British helped the confederacy even though they said they were neutral.  The Irish attacks actually united separate provinces into the country of Canada!

Rose Dugdale is a remarkable but controversial figure known for her dramatic transition from a life of wealth and privilege to radical activism. Born into an affluent English family, she enjoyed an elite education at institutions like Oxford University, where she excelled academically. However, disillusioned with the inequalities she witnessed, Dugdale abandoned her privileged upbringing to align herself with revolutionary causes. She became a passionate advocate for the Irish Republican cause, participating in high-profile acts of defiance, including the infamous theft of valuable paintings from a family estate to support the Irish struggle. Her story is one of rebellion, conviction, and the pursuit of justice, making her a figure of both fascination and debate.

The Celtic Yule festival was the foundation for what we call Christmas today.  I will present the Yule festival as well as cover some other traditions still followed today. As I describe the Yule festival you will see many similarities to our modern day Christmas making it apparent as with other Christian holidays, that it was actually rooted in pagan culture.

Oíche Samhain was celebrated on the eve of November 1st.  It is  also the Irish name for the month of November. The festival was a time when people believed the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was thin, and that spirits could cross between worlds more easily. 
It was a time to welcome in the harvest and welcome in “the dark half of the year.” For the Celts, the Samhain festival was the most significant of the four quarter 

Celebrations included: 

Lighting bonfires 
Dancing and singing 
Feasting 
Leaving treats out for fairies 
Children playing games to entertain the dead 
Adults updating the dead on the past year's news 
Leaving doors and windows open for the dead to come in 
Using particular foods for divination or soothsaying
