The hard truth is that jealousy, animosity, and violence aren’t confined to the past. As Americans, we’ve come to expect a wide variety of choices and options that cater to our preferences— whether we’re eating in a restaurant or shopping in a store. We’re not used to hearing the word “cannot”— and it usually frustrates us when we do.
