As of December 27, 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 has grossed $16.7 million in the United States and Canada, and $68.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $85.4 million.

In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside News of the World, Promising Young Woman, and Pinocchio, and was projected to gross around $10 million from 2,150 theaters in its opening weekend. It ended up debuting to $16.7 million, finishing above expectations with the best total of the COVID-19 pandemic, but 87% less than the first film’s opening weekend.

Internationally, the film was expected to debut to around $60 million from 32 countries.[ In China, the film had a disappointing first-day opening, only grossing $4.6 million, compared to the local film The Rescue, which grossed $8.9 million its first day. Global projections were subsequently lowered to $35–40 million, and the film went on to debut to $38.2 million, including $5 million from IMAX screens. China was the largest opening with $18.8 million, followed by Taiwan ($3.6 million), Thailand ($2 million), Brazil ($1.7 million), Japan ($1.6 million), Mexico ($1.6 million), Singapore ($1.3 million), the United Kingdom ($1.2 million), and Spain ($1.1 million). In its second weekend of international release, the film made $19.4 million from 40 countries. Its largest markets were Australia ($4.5 million) and Japan ($2.5 million), while China’s running total reached $23.9 million.

Critical Response

Wonder Woman 1984 was praised for its “escapist qualities” and Jenkins’ take on the 1980s, but many commentators found it “overindulgent or cliché”. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 63% of 326 critics gave the film a positive review, with an average rating of 6.20/10. Summary

After winning a battle against a rival group of Belter pirates, Camina discovers the remains of Klaes Ashford’s ship, which she never thought she’d be able to find. Amos returns to Baltimore after a woman named Lydia who took care of him during his younger years dies. He meets Lydia’s boyfriend, Charles, who she started dating later in life. Charles reveals that he will soon have to leave the house in which he spent several years living with Lydia since a man named Erich owns the house and requested that he move after Lydia’s death. On Tycho Station, Holden receives a message from Monica Stuart stating that she has proof that someone is attempting to steal the protomolecule. Holden goes to her room to meet her, but he finds Monica missing and evidence that a fight has taken place in her room. On Mars, Bobbie reveals to Alex that she has been investigating Martian weapons trafficking with the help of Avasarala. Alex offers to talk with Admiral Sauveterre, who they believe may be involved with the trafficking, but Sauveterre refuses to speak with him. He is, however, able to set up a meeting with Lieutenant Babbage who works for Sauveterre. Avasarala expresses her concerns about Belter factions launching an attack on Earth during a diplomatic meeting, but Nancy Gao largely dismisses her concerns. Holden, with the help of Fred Johnson, finds Monica, nearly dead, in a shipping container in Tycho’s cargo bay. Amos confronts Erich, who agrees to let Charles keep the house, but also says that he’ll kill Amos if he is ever seen in Baltimore again.

Naomi travels to Pallas Station where she reconnects with Belter friends Cyn and Karal. She asks them to tell Felip that she has arrived in hopes of seeing him. Alex meets with Babbage, who attempts to extract information from him for Sauveterre. On Ashford’s ship, Camina finds a recording that Ashford took moments before his death in which Inaros describes his plan to go after targets bigger than Tycho or Ceres. Camina announces to her crew that she plans to find and attack Inaros. On Tycho, Sakai, the chief engineer, finds the identities of the people who purchased the shipping container in which Monica was discovered, but when Holden goes to confront them, he finds that they have already been killed. Bo-Katan and her fellow Mandalorian Koska Reeves agree to help rescue Grogu in exchange for Bo-Katan getting the Darksaber from Gideon and the Mandalorian considering her offer to help them liberate Mandalore. The group kidnaps Dr. Pershing and uses his shuttle to get close enough to crash land on Gideon’s cruiser, with Fett pretending to attack them in Slave I before attacking the Imperials. Bo-Katan, Koska, Fennec, and Dune fight through stormtroopers to the cruiser’s bridge. Meanwhile, the Mandalorian finds the Dark Troopers, defeats one of them with the Beskar spear, and ejects the rest into space. He fights Gideon with the spear and overpowers the Moff, making him the new rightful owner of the Darksaber. The Dark Troopers return, but they are all destroyed by Luke Skywalker, a Jedi that Grogu had contacted on Tython. The Mandalorian gives Grogu permission to go with Skywalker to complete his training. Later, Fett and Fennec travel to Jabba’s Palace on Tatooine where Fett kills Bib Fortuna and claims Jabba’s throne.

Summary

Prisoner Migs Mayfeld is working on The Karthon Chop Fields but is remanded into the custody of marshall Cara Dune. The Mandalorian needs Mayfeld, a former Imperial soldier, in order to acquire the coordinates to Moff Gideon’s ship. Mayfeld directs them to a hidden Imperial rhydonium refinery on Morak. As all the others are known to Imperial security, the Mandalorian must accompany Mayfeld into the refinery to access a terminal and steal the coordinates. Mayfeld and the Mandalorian hijack one of the transports and disguise themselves as soldiers. The highly explosive rhydonium shipments are attacked by pirates, who the Mandalorian fights off with the aid of two TIE fighters. They reach the facility, the only shipment to survive.

The terminal Mayfeld needs is in the officer’s mess hall, but Mayfeld sees his former commanding officer, Valin Hess, and fears being recognized. The Mandalorian goes instead but the terminal requires a facial scan, forcing him to remove his helmet to acquire the codes. He is confronted by Hess, but Mayfeld intervenes. After a tense drink where Hess callously dismisses the Imperial soldiers and civilians who died in Operation: Cinder,[a] an angered Mayfeld shoots Hess dead. Mayfeld and the Mandalorian fight their way to the roof, while Fennec Shand and Dune provide covering fire, and Boba Fett arrives aboard Slave I. Mayfeld destroys the refinery with a well-placed sniper shot. The ship is pursued by two TIE fighters, but Fett obliterates them using a seismic charge. Dune lets Mayfeld go free as thanks for his aid, and the Mandalorian sends Moff Gideon a threatening message, vowing to rescue Grogu.

Alex was born on Mars, in the Mariner Valley. Having grown up there, Alex was raised with the incongruous Texas drawl that has caught on among the largely Indian and Chinese population who live there. Unlike the rest of his sizable family on Mars, Alex looked at the generations-long terraforming project with a sense of restlessness and dread.

With dreams of flying fast attack gunships, he enlisted in the Martian Congressional Republic Navy.

After his tour, honorable service discharge, a sentiment of adventure developed within him and made him determined to seek a pilot job in the industrial navy of the Asteroid belt. Alex served aboard the Pur’n’Kleen ice hauler, Canterbury as one of her pilots alongside his crewmates until the vessel’s destruction.

Amos Burton (played by Wes Chatham)

Amos Burton is a ship mechanic originating from Earth. Currently, he works aboard the Rocinante and is one of the four crew members.

A skilled mechanic and combatant, he is a master of survival in the dog-eat-dog world of the system and has a tendency towards violence.

The Rocinante

The Rocinante (“Roci”) is a Corvette-class light frigate with multiple roles, such as torpedo bomber and boarding party insertion.

Originally commissioned as the MCRN Tachi  (ECF 270), the ship was stationed onboard the MCRN battleship Donnager. It was renamed by James Holden after he and his crew used it to escape from the Donnager.
