Paramedics respond when people need help. But when they experience violence, who protects them, and what happens after they report it?

Mandy Johnston returns for her second episode of The Inflection Point to discuss external violence against paramedics and what it takes to move beyond a zero-tolerance policy.

Mandy is the epitome of a leader and a trailblazer in protecting others. Her work in paramedic safety and violence prevention connects policy, reporting, education, and collaboration across agencies. Her approach demonstrates change management in practice: listening to paramedics, building trust, reducing barriers, securing resources, and turning frontline concerns into organizational action.

A regular narrow-complex tachycardia at 180 bpm: sinus tachycardia or SVT?

We break down the clinical and ECG features that help paramedics distinguish a compensatory sinus tachycardia from a true re-entry rhythm without relying on heart rate alone.

How quickly do we lose muscle when we stop moving, and what does that mean as we get older or when our patients become sick, injured, or immobilized?

In this episode of The Inflection Point, we sit down with Dr. Chris McGlory, Assistant Professor at Queen’s University and a leading researcher in skeletal muscle physiology, nutrition, exercise, and disuse atrophy.

We explore what actually drives muscle hypertrophy, why exercise is the primary stimulus for adaptation, how dietary protein supports muscle protein synthesis, and what happens when that stimulus suddenly disappears.

The conversation then moves beyond the gym.

What happens to our muscle as we age? How quickly can we lose it during bed rest or immobilization? What happens following surgery or illness? And why can the same period of inactivity have very different consequences for an older patient with less physiological reserve?

Dr. McGlory also takes us through the concept of a catabolic crisis: an acute insult followed by muscle and functional loss, incomplete recovery, and progressively less reserve when the next insult occurs.

What stood out throughout this conversation was Dr. McGlory’s approach to evidence. Despite his extraordinary depth of expertise, he is remarkably humble and deliberate about distinguishing what the evidence supports, where uncertainty remains, and when a question extends beyond his expertise.

Ultimately, this conversation is about much more than building muscle.

It is about the muscle we are preserving today, the people we will become as we age, and understanding what muscle loss can mean for the patients we care for.
