An impromptu week off from the pod has led us back to us nerding out over songs, and this one is another that we use in our songwriting camps. Chris Stapleton’s Either Way is a masterclass in story telling, doing the simple things well and has a grammy winning performance at its core.

After a month off, we’re back with a bonfire classic. Written by Stevie Nicks, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac is unarguably a classic in the Pop/Rock sphere. A US number 1 single from their 1977 album Rumours, it’s easy to forget, or switch off to, the craft and magic that made songs like this, from this era, so iconic.

Jai Paul’s story is one that really captured Michelle’s heart, and she wanted to share it with our listenership. Jai Paul is a British songwriter/producer whose early career exploded, leading to an album leak, a long hiatus and a comeback. This story touches upon what art means to fans, an artist’s ownership over their art, mental health and questions of what could have been.

It’s Alex’s turn to bring the track this week and at a time where world politics are very prescient, he’s taking us back to 2015 for World War Free, a protest/political song by Thabo. This is another track that we use in our songwriting camps to demonstrate some of the techniques used or back up some of our songwriting pointers. It’s Michelle’s turn to bring the track this week and she’s brought in a modern classic. My Mind by Yebba is literally a track that we use in our songwriting camps to show off some of the techniques that we’re teaching and trying to implement. Yebba is a tour de force vocalist and performer who has gone on to big things, but we’re going back to the start of her career to comb through this emotional bomb of a song.

I like to call her a Neo-Folk artist, even if that may not be a real thing. She fuses ambient music, such as gong baths and meditation inspired drones, with a classic Pop arrangements and Folk melodies, all of which makes for a beautiful and unique sound. A sound that you can hear on her album ‘Some Hills Were Once Islands’, co-produced by us here at The Inscape. You can listen everywhere now or even purchase a vinyl and print to support Sami. 

She is a mature, insightful artist who lives what David Lynch would call “The Art Life”. She’s as candid as she is romantic about the journey that many of us creatives undergo and offers a great example for many artists to follow.

This week, Alex brings the song, and it’s predictably depressing! Andy Hull is the lead songwriter and singer for US band, Manchester Orchestra. He has a knack for distilling the complex into something accessible, simple yet soul crushingly effective. We take a look at that part of his craft, as well as his ability to tell us a s story, regardless of whether it’s something he has experienced himself.
