This is Part 2 of my conversation with guest Mathura “Temwa” Mahendren! If you haven’t listened to Part 1, go back and begin there! You’ll want to hear this conversation in order, especially given the beautiful opening that Mathura shares.
As mentioned in the notes for Part 1, for the first time ever, we’ve decided to share our full conversation - from our pre-chat (which is juicy and felt like part of the episode from the outset), to how we set intentions (which I do with every guest, but have never aired before), and the epic conversation that followed, which we have broken into 2 parts for your ease of listening!
Mathura is a storyteller by nature, and a design researcher by nurture. By weaving the stories of the courage and resiliency embodied by her grandparents, parents, and many others who have come before, Mathura reveals the foundations of her personal and professional practices of shaping change through embodiment, ancestral connection and love as the connective tissue in everything she creates.
You will be transported by the morning prayers of Mathura’s Appama and ground into the impossible tragedy that made Mathura’s conception and birth a blessing of love amidst inconceivable sorrow (TW: Mathura’s story references the sudden loss of a young child, Mathura’s older sister, as foundation and context for how Mathura came to be in the world).
You won’t want to miss Mathura’s insights on calibrating our nervous systems, how fear holds us back at work, the definitions of love that guide everything she does, and an embodied understanding of what it means to emotionally, physically, and spiritually ‘re-member’ who we are.
Mathura’s practice is rooted in a commitment to designing and sharing tools, frameworks, and brave spaces that can hold individuals, groups, and relationships through difference, discomfort, grief, change, and ultimately, growth. She is also intimately aware of the ways in which our ability to move through these experiences is intertwined with how and how deeply we were taught to love. To that end, love is both the method and the madness that underpins all of her bodies of work.
