In Martin Scorsese's oscar nominated gangster picture The Irishman, Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) grows old and remorseful after killing his friend and Teamsters Union President Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) at the order of mob boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci).

In the film's final scene, after speaking wiwth his priest, Sheeran asks him leave te door open a little bit, and the result is the final shot of The Irishman, with Sheeran looking small and insignificant through the slightly ajar door. What does this ending mean?
