This is general information, not legal advice.
If you live in the Florida Panhandle or southern Alabama, your October 15 tax deadline moved to February. Tampa, Orlando, and Miami got nothing. And if you owed the IRS in April, the storm didn't buy you a single extra day on that bill.

If you filed an extension back in April, your 2025 return is due Thursday, October 15, and there is no second extension. An extension gave you more time to file, not more time to pay. In this episode, I explain why not filing because you can't pay is the most expensive mistake in this business: the penalty for not filing is ten times the penalty for not paying, and filing on time is what gets you the cheaper payment plan rate.
Also this week: the IRS launched a new official app that replaces IRS2Go and puts your balance, payments, notices, transcripts, and identity protection PIN on your phone. And Treasury and the IRS put out proposed rules that let some farmland sellers pay the tax on their gain in four equal installments when the land goes to an active farmer and stays restricted to farm use for 10 years.
This week's takeaway: An extension is time to file, not time to pay. If you owe and you can't pay, file anyway by October 15, then download the new IRS app, log in, and look at what the IRS says you owe.

The IRS lost roughly a quarter of its exam and collection workforce in a single year, and audits dropped. So why did collection revenue go up 17 percent? Because automated collection notices don't need a human being. A computer sees an unpaid balance and sends letter after letter, all the way to a levy. If you owe the IRS, the part that's chasing you runs on autopilot.
Also this week: the CP53E notice that confused about 4.2 million people about their refunds, and the free Identity Protection PIN that shuts down most tax identity theft.
This week's takeaway: open your IRS mail, log into your IRS online account to see where you actually stand, and get your Identity Protection PIN.

Could Hurricane Irma be the best thing that's ever happened to you? I know that sounds strange, doesn't it? I'm Darrin T. Mish, they call the the IRS Solution Attorney and here's what I mean by that: Hurricane Irma could be the most important thing that's ever happened to you, or actually, the best thing that's ever happened to you, at least in regards to your IRS Tax Problem. And here's why I'm saying that - I've learned throughout life, I'm 50 years old, and I've learned this in the last, I would say, five years or so, that every adversity that you go through, every challenge that you go through - inside of that challenge and while it's happening there lies an opportunity. An opportunity for improvement, to just get into a better situation. I can remember being in challenging situations myself and sometimes it seems, you know, hopeless and you get really down and out. It just really helps to remember that there's an opportunity inside of that every single time. Lemme tell you what I mean about Hurricane Irma. Hurricane Irma hit a lot of people here in the state of Florida and even in Georgia and maybe even in Alabama. Because of that fact, I predict that the IRS is going to lay off us taxpayers who have tax problems for, maybe, 90 days or so. Here's why that's a good thing: If they "lay-off", it gives us time, you and I, time to prepare your situation so that we can do an Offer in Compromise, so that we can get you into Hardship status, so that we can come up with some collection alternative to put you in a better situation.
