  • Latane Hughes - Music Industry Chat and Good Room Mix

    Welcome back, gang.

this episode is a hybrid - music-filled mostly, and some conversation up top with the one and only Latane Hughes, followed by, starting around minute 16, a mix of songs assembled by Latane with a bit of help by yours truly. Latane is a music lover. We've been friends for 13 years now. I met Latane in college -- and along the way, he's been a friend, a consistent source of energy and inspiration, and also a source of music knowledge and influence. Many of the best music-oriented experiences that I've known have been thanks to him. Latane is a booking agent who manages the touring careers for a roster of 30+ musical acts, representing artists from all over the globe and specializing in booking shows in the North American territory. By night, by morning, by all of his other times it seems, Latane is scouring the digital and physical planets for music that he shares in mixes like these and as a DJ with the Fundido duo and Earth Beath Team. Also - you'll notice cf watkins's drawing skills have been impacted during isolation . just kidding. to accompany the uncut quarantine podcast format, she has adjusted the illustration format. a visual parallel that I think does justice (and more) to the trippy time we're in . each portrait will be done as a "blind contour" - a drawing exercise prohibiting the drawer from i) looking at the page and ii) lifting the utensil from the page (until the drawing is complete) (you might try it yourself for fun) . woo!

  • David McCullough - Strength of Character Matters Most

David McCullough is a champion of history, humanity, and the human spirit.

He has written 12 nonfiction works including "John Adams", "Truman", and most recently "The Pioneers", which hit shelves in the spring of 2019.

The desire and capacity to improve the world through one's contribution, to stand up in the face of struggle, to saddle up, commit, and come out the other side having learned and represented something of importance - something bigger than you...

This undercurrent - that of the human spirit overcoming challenge for the betterment of the whole - pervades all of his writing. From stories of U.S. Presidents, to the American Revolution, to the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Panama Canal, and the invention of human flight, one idea is always there:

Our potential is boundless should we, in the name of worthy ideals, summon the courage to try and the fortitude to keep going.

I hope you enjoy David's wisdom (and singing) on this episode -- thank you for tuning in.
