Listen Later

“You start with what you can do today, and what you know today that will alleviate suffering. And you move from there. You never know where it’s going to lead you. None of us expected to do what we wound up doing, and yet we did.”
Today we are joined by the author of The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service, Laura Kaplan. The book has recently gone back into print with Vintage Books. Laura tells us about the creation of Jane and stories from the women who provided abortions in the late 1960’s and 1970s.
Laura Kaplan was a member of Jane  and a founding member of the Emma Goldman Women’s Health Center in Chicago. She has worked as lay midwife and an advocate of nursing home residents, and she has established a shelter for battered women. She was the managed care project director for Citizen Action of New York and sat on the board of the National Women’s Health Network.  She is the author of The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service which was first published in 1996.
