Last week's show broadcast Janus Adams' Distinguished Speaker Series lecture before a live audience: "KNOW WHEN TO LEAVE THE PLANTATION." On the show this week, a followup roundtable led by W. Mark Colvson, Dean of the Library. Recorded the day after the event, members of the campus community joined him and me for a mid-day chat. Some in the audience had attended the speech; others had not. All were welcome to speak their minds and open their hearts. "There is no agenda," said Colvson in his opening remarks. In that spirit, what resulted was a riveting hour of caring, sharing and -- most importantly -- listening to each other.

As a student, Janus sought solace from the pressures of a segregated society in walks to Huguenot Street in historic New Paltz, New York. With the North in denial of its slavery ties, little did she know she’d been following in the footsteps of Sojourner Truth. Then, in one telling incident, she was made aware of the vestiges of slavery and the suppression of women’s rights driving American society. Inspired by passions nurtured at the school and informed by scholarly work on the Underground Railroad, her speech mines the wisdom of the UGRR; extracting its power to rescue freedom-seekers to this day.

On Juneteenth (the African-American holiday celebrating the end of slavery), five writers spend the night in a cellar kitchen where enslaved people were once held enchained by the town of New Paltz's colonial-era founding families.

Reflecting on their transformative experience, they perform their monologues before a live audience at the historic Reformed Church of New Paltz. This program was produced in cooperation with Historic Huguenot Street, The Slave Dwelling Project, and TMI Project's #BlackStoriesMatter initiative.
