  • Amanda Ono VP Customer Experience, People and Culture
On this episode of The Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Amanda Ono - VP Customer Experience, People & Culture | Engaging customers, leaders and employees to maximize their potential. We talk about the following and other items Resolver Importance of Customer Experience Traveling Future HR Challenges Amanda's Bio Amanda Ono has spent her career learning to maximize a company's most valuable investment — its people. Boasting over 20 years of international experience in organizational development, HR consulting, and change management, she's implemented successful talent and leadership initiatives in six countries across four continents. You can currently find her at Resolver, a Kroll business and worldwide leader in defining risk intelligence, making her mark as both VP Customer Experience and VP People & Culture. For most of her professional life, Amanda has been on a mission to understand what makes highly effective organizations tick. As an undergraduate in psychology, she saw pioneering research on the effects of unconscious bias and racism in resumé screening up close. After graduating, she honed her craft by tackling training and organizational development at talent management firms across Canada. Soon her skills were in such demand that invitations to implement leadership programs across the globe started to roll in — first in South Africa, followed by Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Since joining the Resolver team in 2016, she's only expanded on her record of success. Implementing processes and strategies that have enabled Resolver to scale by over 120%, expand into four countries, and acquire three companies — Ono's efforts have led to being recognized as one of Canada's Great Places to Work six years in a row. Despite her accolades, Amanda is determined to continue engaging, accelerating, and inspiring her colleagues at Resolver to deliver on the company's motto: Aim Big, Be Great, and Be Loved by Customers. Amanda's Social Media Amanda's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amandaono/ Resolver website: https://www.resolver.com/ Amanda's Advice I would say that no matter if you're in HR or where your next journey goes, we kind of start at the top of the conversation talking about traveling. Talking about how we build culture and HR and grow as leaders. I think it's always looking to develop and to grow as empathetic humans, I think empathy for the employee base for your customer base for humans in general. Whether traveling to Thailand or in Toronto, I think it makes such an impact on how you can connect with people, and how you can really foster long term relationships. So just to kind of encourage people to continue to look inside, empathy is sometimes hard. Because it challenges how we see the world and sometimes feels uncomfortable. But it's such a key part of growth for both, businesses, as well as individuals. That would be my key advice other than just eat lots of fruits and vegetables. • Gil Bar Lev - CEO/Founder HomeRoots -Disrupting the Furniture Industr
On this episode of The Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Gil (Gilad) Bar Lev - CEO/Founder HomeRoots We talk about the following and other items His company HomeRoots The connection between Furniture, Tech and eCommerce 3 Things you need to shake up an industry How does the furniture industry work Gil's Bio Gil Bar-Lev founded HomeRoots combining his passion for furniture, eCommerce, and technology to disrupt the way selling and buying furniture is done with a novel wholesale platform. HomeRoots leverages "community buying power" by uniting sellers of furniture, lighting and home décor and retailers and licensed trade in one place, making the B2B shopping experience in this vertical as easy as the B2C shopping experience. They help sellers and buyers increase profit margin and reduce overhead. Gil began his career as a software developer and moved quickly into senior leadership for the startup he worked for in the early 2000s. Recognized as a technology innovator, he was invited by multiple software development groups and corporations around Europe to train CTO's and IT managers for best practices on web development. He moved to New Jersey in late 2002 and led a major financial project for Toys-R-Us, networking their physical stores around the globe with their headquarters. Witnessing the development of online commerce in real time, Gil was tasked by Toys-R-Us to strategize and lead their technical integration with Amazon.com. Since his departure from Toys-R-Us, Gil launched other online businesses and consulted with various companies in the wholesale, retail, eCommerce, and logistics verticals. Gil has BSc in Computer Science from HIT Israel, and MBA in Marketing & Finance from Rutgers University News Jersey. He lives with his wife Dafna, 3 children and their dog in New Jersey. I'll say that it's not going to be easy. It's actually one of the most difficult things that a person can do emotionally as well as even financial. There is a burden there. You can't pay yourself market value tbecause the money needs to go to the company. You're the one who's paying the company and now the company pays you at the beginning. But when you get to the point where you feel like the company now drives you forward that the company is now leading you when you are not leading the company, that's where that's your sign that something good is happening. Now you feel like there's a momentum, the company drives you there is demand there is there's suppliers, people are asking for your services, people are asking about your company, there's traction. Now it's just about moving on to the next stage where it's okay, now let me start thinking about my priorities. What do I need to handle first? Am I spending my time on the right things versus not? So then comes the second one, but first, you just want the company to drive you forward? For the listeners, which are yet to launch a company, maybe that sounds a little bit weird at first. But once you get to that point, you understand and I think that's a good sign. Just something out there for the listeners to think about. • Laura Malcolm Founder/CEO Give InKind
On this episode of The Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Laura Malcolm - Founder/CEO Give InKind We talk about the following and other items Give Inkind Gardening Female Founder Alliance Her entrepreneurial journey Laura's Bio Laura Malcolm is the Founder/CEO of Give InKind, a modern platform for coordinating support through major life events. After experiencing the tragic loss of her first child, Laura took her 10 years of Product Management experience and set out to create an easier way for friends, families and communities to come together when it's needed most. In 2016, Give InKind was launched, combining a Care Calendar, Wishlist, Crowdfunding and Updates into one aggregated support tool. Laura bootstrapped Give InKind for 3 years, taking her family across the world twice to save money and work with Give InKind's offshore development team, and has since raised $3.8M from top investors in Seattle, including Madrona, Trilogy, Graham & Walker, SeaChange, Tacoma Venture Fund, Tapas Capital, Alliance of Angels, and more. She has two young sons at home and is a native of Tacoma, where Give InKind is based. I think this is advice that is actually just being echoed right now. But I would have sort of said it anyway. is that your business has to be sustainable. You have to create a business that will make money that has customers. I think that we sort of lost track in this frothy market of the fundamentals of business. It was really easy to think because we've seen so many unprofitable unicorn companies, right? That just lose hundreds of millions of dollars. It's really easy to think like growth at all costs and that is not going to work anymore. It probably shouldn't have been working all this time. I think the biggest thing for me is that anybody on this journey right now needs to be thinking about how you can raise and when you can raise and optimizing for a raise and investors optimized for a good solid business you only want to have to count on yourself. Take life slow and life's too short to to be walking fast. I always try to stop and smell the roses and try not to rush places and try to try to enjoy it. Try to enjoy the journey instead of focusing on the destination, Life definitely moves by fast. I know, I'm super young, I'm only 27. I shouldn't be saying all this stuff. But like the last 8 years, my life has flown by pretty fast. I'm almost 30 years old now. So it definitely, definitely flows. Gosh, it literally feels like not too long ago. I was a sophomore freshman in college.

(24:12 to 25:22) That's something that I tried to live by that philosophy, just to try to be present and try to try to slow it down a little bit. Get off social media. Stop watching Netflix and get outside.

Don't care. I know and I'm sure you get it. I promise. It's a really, really hard time for everybody with liquidities being dried up. Don't placate and don't get platitudes, don't compromise who you are. Because in the long run, you're going to end up just shooting yourself in the foot. It took us five years to get to where we wanted and we're on a trajectory path that nobody can derail it. Not even market conditions can derail it. So if you're true to who you are, if you're sticking to your experience. No exigent circumstance can derail your so as cheeky and prophetic and bullshit as it sounds, stick to what you know. Then if you need to iterate, take a little bit of your ego out of it. But stick to who you are as a person and just be honest, and have a good support system. That's not an echo chamber, but have a good support system that can make you feel vulnerable and safe. At the same time. If you have a group or constituency that can make you feel vulnerable, to tell you what you're thinking, hey, I don't know if this is gonna work. But safe to say that at the same time it's better than any investor is better than your advisor. It's better than any network that you can have. More importantly, they're fleeting, so leaning into them, if you think it's like an online platform or whatever, if it's FYI, if it's Jason in his constituency, lean into it in a big way, and just really own it. Don't switch don't look for the next thing. A lot of people have one idea about a system and they're like, oh, this next system looks so much better because it's the system 2.0 Why? You don't need this system. 2.0 the system 1.0 has been there from thinking thing Our Affiliates Close.com - If you hate your sales CRM or know that you inevitably need to make a change because what you have is not working, certainly check out Close. • Leon Richardson Director Adult Services Division King County
On this episode of The Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Leon Richardson - Director for the Adult Services Division within King County's Department of Community and Health Services We talk about the following and other items Being a U.S. Army Reserve Officer Adult Services Division within King County's Department of Community and Health Services Importance of collaboration Focusing on removing barriers Leon's Bio Mr. Leon Richardson is the Director for the Adult Services Division within King County's Department of Community and Human Services. He assumed these duties on July 26, 2021, after most recently serving as the Division Deputy Director and as the Director overseeing operations for the county run vaccination sites. He is a native of Washington State, and a graduate of the Washington State University and the New Mexico Military Institute. He is still actively serving in the United States Army Reserve and his career to date has been filled with public service at the port, city, and county levels. In 2020, Leon established and led operations for DCHS's COVID-19 Isolation/Quarantine (Assessment/Recovery Facilities) and was the leader of King County's high-volume vaccination sites in Auburn and Kent. As the Director for Adult Services, Mr. Richardson focuses on removing barriers and ensuring that King County provides services that deliver the most equitable opportunities for people to achieve their greatest potential. His division has the responsibility for providing Adult human services to the residents of King County. Within this portfolio some of the things he oversees are the veterans, seniors, housing, domestic violence, and civil legal work. A lot of this work is accomplished through the over 280 contracts with community partners to develop, support and provide human services. Mr. Richardson passion is serving those in need and ensuring that resources are accessible by all who need them. He firmly believes that we need to be the change we want to see in our community and that we achieve this through collaboration and teamwork. One of the things that we're looking at is, is there a need in the community? That is that people feel that the government is really being responsive to them. One of the things that we pride ourselves on is filling the gaps, recognizing that we're in this large system between local government, state and federal and whether there's like programs or maybe programs only at one particular level. The need is vast beyond that, or maybe there's a state program and a federal program that work together. But then there's a gap in between where people potentially aren't eligible or don't qualify, or whatever the thing may be in order to receive services or the health data they need. Where are those spaces and we we like to hear that and figure out how we can be more responsive to the community Our Affiliates Close.com - If you hate your sales CRM or know that you inevitably need to make a change because what you have is not working, certainly check out Close. It really is and I have a formula. That is compassion plus connection plus communication multiplied by consistency equals a culture of trust. If you're doing all of those things then everything else will come so much easier. That's my biggest tip for anyone considering entrepreneurship or current business owners. Focus on culture. For military spouses out there. Please apply. That's not wisdom, but we need wonderful people and if any of your listeners know of anyone in the military community, I would love for them to be connected with us and we just love supporting Veterans through transition. That's our heart as well and then we just love finding job opportunities for Military Spouses.
