  • "Iron Sharpening Iron" With Mitchell Cohen-Keys to a Marriage With "Spark" Curating the Perfect Year and Continuous Improvement

    Mitchell Cohen

Mitchell Cohen is one of my favorite guests. He’s like a younger, smoother forehead possessing, better hair having version of me. Oh, and he’s much better looking. I’m not jealous at all.

But since he possesses all these superior qualities I’m happy to take advantage of them so as to make myself look better. You know kinda like Mrs. Wright always makes me look better when we go out? Well, Mitchell makes me better by coming on the JWS.

That my friends is what iron sharpening iron is all about. It’s about making each other better. This is what Mitchell does for me.

In this episode we cover a lot of ground. I wanted to dig into Mitchell’s methodology for doing his year in review and how he plans his upcoming year. He’s extremely disciplined, and much like yours truly obsessed with self improvement.

Near the end of the conversation he asked me what might be one of the most honoring questions ever. He noted how Mrs. Wright and I seem to have a “spark.” He, being a single man, wanted to know what I thought it was that gave us said spark.

Man, I loved that question, and I think I actually gave a pretty good and transparent answer. If you are looking for a life partner, I think some of the insight I give is some of the best two pennies I’ve ever tossed out.

    Thanks for listening. Enjoy!

  • Best Friday Ever for 1-28-22 The Problem With Gaining Pleasure With No Struggle. A Word From Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman

What the hell is going on? Why are people so miserable yet so sedated by pleasure all at the same time?

I just learned one of my college friends overdosed and died recently. He was not some out there, loser who was down and out. He was a typical middle aged guy making his way.

I’ve had two fraternity brothers die at their own hands. I have one who lost his son to suicide during the pandemic. What the hell is happening?

I talk to my daughters about this all the time. Why do so many of their friends vape, smoke pot, do cocaine, take hits of acid, struggle with alcohol? Why is everyone having such a hard time feeling good?

I am obsessed with feeling good. I love natural highs. I love the endorphin rush my ice bath gives me. I love the feeling of completing a hard workout and the pleasure that comes with it.

However we now live in a society where there is an abundance of pleasure and a scarcity of work ethic. We don’t have to work for our pleasure any longer. This is a problem. I posted a while back one of the reasons Americans are so fat is we no longer have to struggle for food. Our bodies were designed to struggle for our rewards.

However, in modern society we have so much ease and pleasure at our disposal we can set a constant endorphin drip with nothing more than an iPhone. From now on when you see someone entransed by their phone think of it as an endorphin drip. Scary thought huh?

Now we have the metaverse on the horizon. We are about to live in the matrix. Well, some of us are. I’m concerned we are about to see people living in alternate universes. I just saw this picture on Insta and it pretty well sums up where we’re headed.

    life in the metaverse

If we are able to escape reality and retreat to a universe that only exists in our minds then will we end up seeing colonies of people just lying on cots strapped to IV’s while their minds roam the metaverse? This can’t be good.

In this quick Best Friday Ever, I swiped a message from Tom Bileyu’s Impact Theory, in which neuroscientist Andrew Huberman lays it out pretty succinctly.

Here’s my message. Stay with us. Stay in reality. Alter your real reality and become all you are meant to be. You and I were not meant to live in the metaverse. We were meant to live in the hear and the now of reality.

Once you embrace this fact, and realize the unbelievable capabilities each of us have you won’t want to go to a fantasy world. You will want to remain a badass in the real world.

I’m pulling for you to stay and kickass.

  • Best Friday Ever for 1-14-22 My Morning Routine That Helps Me Crush The Day Plus A Lesson From Epictetus: If You've Decided to Live, Then LIVE!

Best Friday Ever for 1-14-22 My Morning Routine That Helps Me Crush The Day Plus A Lesson From Epictetus: If You’ve Decided to Live, Then LIVE!

Happy Friday folks. I thought with the new year still in the honeymoon phase I’d share with you my morning routine. I’m not afraid to change it on occasion, but the core remains pretty consistent. Having a well thought out and disciplined morning routine helps me practice carpe diem better than any other practice.

Also, I share one of my favorite passages from “Letters from a Stoic” by Epictetus. If you’ve decided to live, then live. Don’t hold back. Live not only for your sake but for those around you. Live!

Also, I mentioned Brian Scott’s book “The Reality Revolution” where I learned The Five Tibetan Rites. Here’s a link to the book and a video of me demonstrating the rites.

Also-you can now pre-order a copy of my new book “The Stone Chiseler” and I hope you will. Sign up for a signed first run copy HERE.

This is a book about a young boy learning to find meaning in all circumstances. While Giovanni Christiani has been sentenced to chisel away aimlessly at a stone for the rest of his days instead he decides to chisel away and shape something else: his character.

This is a great book for anyone struggling to find meaning in the hardships of life. I do hope you will check it out.

    I’m pulling for you,

    Jason

  • Let's Play Guitar With Tim Woosley Founder of Enjoy Playing Guitar

    Tim Woosley

It was the Fall semester of 1994 at Stephen F. Austin State University. If you hit campus at the right time you might have seen a young, 18 year old from Sulphur Springs named Jason Wright lugging his guitar case across campus. As is often the case with first semester college students I was a bit of an imbecile. Instead of taking advantage of my football scholarship paying for my guitar lessons I instead dropped the class. I just couldn’t be bothered to lug that guitar across campus every Thursday.

I have wanted to play guitar for many years. This is the year is the year. I AM going to finally do it. Oh, and best yet. Not only will I not be lugging my guitar across campus I will be learning right here in the comfort of Texas Titan Media Global Headquarters.

Tim Woosley the founder of Enjoy Playing Guitar has offered to teach your favorite podcast host how to play. And YOU can join in the fun. We are going to record all of my lessons and repost on The Jason Wright Show YouTube channel. We’ll also be doing these via Instagram Live and you are welcomed and in fact encouraged to join us.

Here’s a little more about Tim.

    Do you struggle with:

    * Zero musical experience?* Overwhelmed with where to start?* Think you are too old to learn the guitar?

Yes, there’s millions of videos on YouTube for free, but so what? Confusing YouTube videos with no lesson plan. Bouncy ball video lessons.  Too many overwhelming choices so that’s not the solution. It’s like trying to drink through a fire hydrant. And you don’t want to hire expensive local instructors where they teach boring songs like Hot Cross Buns and Mary Had a Little Lamb. It’s got you feeling defeated about where to start.Plus, most of us are so busy that we feel we don’t have time to learn how to play. This is a big problem. And it means putting off playing another day.But it doesn’t have to be this way.Across my career I’ve developed a formula that takes you from clueless to confident on guitar and the beauty of this system is that I show you how learning guitar can be faster, more fun, and easier than you thought. If you are tired of not be able to play the guitar, I can help.

It is my sincere hope this leads to more people learning to play. Grab a guitar, and join in and watch me try to improve playing the guitar always in ALL ways.

  • Best Friday Ever 1-7-22 Don't Self Isolate! Find The People Who Make You Better and Spend Time With Them

It’s so easy to forget one of the most amazing resources all of us have at our disposal: other people. I just spent time with one of my business school classmates and business partners. It’s truly amazing what a boost this is spiritually, emotionally and mentally.

As a dude I find myself in isolation most when I need to be the least. I think a lot of men are bad about this. We tend to run to a self created mental cave. Don’t do that.

Reach out to the people you know and trust who make you better. Learn from them. Share you struggles with them, and let them share theirs.

Proverbs 27:17 reads, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”

I’ve quoted this multiple times and in fact have a series of episodes with this as the title. Go be the iron that sharpens another and by doing so you too will be sharpened.

    Have a great weekend.

  • Jordan Selleck-A Family's Journey to The Ironman

Jordan Selleck is a lot of things. He’s a father. He’s a husband. He’s an entrepreneur and founder. Now he’s an Ironman. So what exactly is an Ironman? Well, let’s start with the definition of this ultra endurance triathalon.

An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.20 km) run, raced in that order. It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.[1][2][3]

Most Ironman events have a limited time of 16 or 17 hours to complete the race, course dependent, with the race typically starting at 7:00am. The mandatory cut off time to complete the 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim is 2 hours 20 minutes. The mandatory bike cut off time for when an athlete must have completed their swim, transition and bike varies generally between 10 hours and 10 hours 30 minutes from when an athlete began their swim. The mandatory run cut off varies between 16 and 17 hours from when athlete began their swim. Many races will also have intermediate bike, run, and transition cut off times specific to each race venue. Any participant who completes the triathlon within these time constraints is designated an Ironman.

The name “Ironman Triathlon” is also associated with the original Ironman triathlon which is now the Ironman World Championship. Held in Kailua-Kona, the world championship has been held annually in Hawaii since 1978 (with an additional race in 1982). Originally taking place in Oahu, the race moved to Kailua-Kona in 1981, where it continues today.[4] The Ironman World Championship has become known for its grueling length, harsh race conditions, and television coverage.[5][6]

To sum it up-It’s hard. It’s really really hard. It’s a test of endurance, stamina, willpower, brainpower, pain tolerance, grit..it’s damn hard, and Jordan Selleck did it.

However, that might not be the best part of this story. The coolest takeaway is what this journey meant to Jordan and Jing (his wife). This wasn’t Jordan’s journey. It was the Selleck’s journey. Jordan would push the Selleck little ones for miles while he trained.

Jing supported him by making sure he was able to meet his necessary training schedule. After it was all said and done the Selleck’s decided THEY would race again this time with Jing joining in.

I’ve always had such great admiration for those who can endure such magnificent feats.

  • Best Friday Ever Tim Ferriss Take Over-"Year End Review Instead of NY Resolutions"

    Tim Ferriss

Ok so it’s not only the end of the week this week. It’s the end of 2021. So for the “Best Friday Ever” episode I had to do something special. So I brought in the big guns/gun. That’s right. I’m bringing in Tim Ferriss one of the pioneers and reigning kings of the pod-iverse. Tim is a HUGE reason why I started The Jason Wright Show in the first place.

Few people that I’ve never met nor most likely ever will meet have had such a profound impact on my life. So I thought I would turn the mic over to Tim today.

This is an episode of Tim’s show he recently published on doing a year end review vs. new year’s resolutions. I think it’s genius. The best part is taking the time to abrogate those things you did the previous year that made you miserable so as to not repeat them. This is a HUGE benefit and best practice.

Here’s what Tim had to say on his site http://www.tim.blog.

Forget New Year’s Resolutions and Conduct a ‘Past Year Review’ Instead (#559)

70 COMMENTSTOPICS: CATEGORIESPRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY, PROTECTING TIME, THE TIM FERRISS SHOW

    Share this:

    * Facebook* Twitter* Email* Reddit* Print*

I’m often asked about how I approach New Year’s resolutions. The truth is that I no longer approach them at all, even though I did for decades. Why the change? I have found “past year reviews” (PYR) more informed, valuable, and actionable than half-blindly looking forward with broad resolutions. I did my first PYR after a mentor’s young daughter died of cancer on December 31st, eight years ago, and I’ve done it every year since. Her passing was a somber reminder that our days here are too precious not to fill them with the people and activities that nourish us most. The PYR takes just 30–60 minutes and looks like this:

    * Grab a notepad and create two columns: POSITIVE and NEGATIVE.* Go through your calendar from the last year, looking at every week.* For each week, jot down on the pad any people or activities or commitments that triggered peak positive or negative emotions for that month. Put them in their respective columns.* Once you’ve gone through the past year, look at your notepad list and ask, “What 20% of each column produced the most reliable or powerful peaks?”* Based on the answers, take your “positive” leaders and schedule more of them in the new year. Get them on the calendar now! Book things with friends and prepay for activities/events/commitments that you know work. It’s not real until it’s in the calendar. That’s step one. Step two is to take your “negative” leaders, put “NOT-TO-DO LIST” at the top, and put them somewhere you can see them each morning for the first few weeks of 2022.
