We talk a lot about second chances in life, but what if you never got your first? That's part of the thinking behind Triple Bottom Brewing's fair chance hiring model.

Since opening in 2019, the Philadelphia-based, 10-barrel craft brewery has prioritized hiring people who face barriers for employment, such as individuals who were formerly incarcerated.

The Jawncast's Brian Seltzer visited Triple Bottom to find out why it embraced fair chance hiring, and how this practice has helped formerly incarcerated people make stable lives for themselves and their families.

The LGBTQ+ community is a big tent made up of a lot of people with very different lives and experiences. And with so many conversations recently about Philadelphia's Pride celebrations, coupled with the backdrop of anti-LGBTQ legislation being introduced and passed in statehouses across the country, we wanted to talk with individual people about what they are thinking right now. On this episode, four people from different parts of Philly's LGBTQ+ community share their stories, their concerns, and their hopes.

Sun Ra was more than a musician. The pioneering jazz composer, keyboardist, and conductor was an experience - from his signature attire to his proclaimed connection to the cosmos. Nearly three decades after his death, Sun Ra’s house in Germantown was designated a historic landmark by the Philadelphia Historical Commission. Shara Dae Howard and Justin Udo, curators of KYW Newsradio’s Artists’ Block series, put Sun Ra’s legendary career into perspective, while also explaining why his home was instrumental in inspiring the out-of-this-world sound he and his Arkestra created. Before ‘Hamilton’ or even ‘In the Heights’, a guy from Philadelphia met Lin-Manuel Miranda at college and started a hip-hop improv group called Freestyle Love Supreme. That group eventually went to Broadway and is now touring the country. The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in two places - a church in Grafton, West Virginia, and the Wanamaker Auditorium in Philadelphia. Its founder, Anna Jarvis, spent much of her life living here and died at the Marshall Square Sanitarium in West Chester. But it wasn’t a peaceful life - when Mother’s Day started getting commercialized, she fought forcefully against it, losing her money and health in the battle. Jennifer Green, Director of Education at the Chester County History Center and author of Dark History of Penn's Woods: Murder, Madness, and Misadventure in Southeastern Pennsylvania, shares Anna Jarvis’s story as we prepare for this year’s Mother’s Day.

What makes a tweet go viral? A local professor would know. Currently studying on sabbatical at the University of Michigan, Mark Leuchter, who teaches religion at Temple University, thought it would be nice to hold an essay-writing seminar for undergrad students, with free pizza as the kicker. What happened next could only exist in a social media world. Bummed that no one showed up, Mark expressed his disappointment on Twitter by posting a photo of an empty room and four untouched boxes of plain pizza, along with a caption that included the closing sentence, "I'm so sad." The tweet exploded, and has generated nearly 9,000 retweets; over 125,000 likes; and close to 3,000 comments. What does the lack of turnout at Mark's event, and the subsequent response it created on social media, tell us about human behavior? And, is it possible for a viral tweet to have a happy ending? In Philadelphia, few people have done more to champion and advance the LGBTQ+ cause than Gloria Casarez.

Casarez, who came from Latin American descent, passed away from breast cancer nearly seven years ago, making it all the more fitting that the city recently honored her with a historical marker.
