Why is the creation of man set apart by the confession and the Bible? What is the significance of “male and female” to our cultural dilemma? What is the “image of God”? What are some practical applications of being made in the image of God? What does it mean to have the law written on the heart? What would happen if Adam and Eve continued in obedience to God? How does this help us to understand Jesus more? These are some of the questions we discuss in this week’s episode. Join Joel, Shawn, Nathan, and Kyle as they discuss WCF 4.2:
After God had made all other creatures, He created man, male and female, with reasonable and immortal souls, endued with knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness, after His own image; having the law of God written in their hearts, and power to fulfil it; and yet under a possibility of transgressing, being left to the liberty of their own will, which was subject unto change. Beside this law written in their hearts, they received a command, not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; which while they kept, they were happy in their communion with God, and had dominion over the creatures.

Today we have the distinct privilege of inviting Dr. R. Scott Clark to talk to him about predestination and the divine decree. In this special episode he helped us understand the development of the doctrine of the decree in Western Christianity, why the Federal Vision gets it wrong, and what pastoral and practical application we should find in this chapter…and much more (with some cowbell!). Be sure to listen to this great interview!
Dr. Clark is a minister in the United Reformed Church and professor of historical theology at Westminster Seminary in Escondido, CA. He has written and edited number of extremely good and useful books including: Caspar Olevian and the Substance of the Covenant of Grace, Covenant, Justification, and Pastoral Ministry, Protestant Scholasticism: Essays in Reassessment (with Carl Trueman), Recovering the Reformed Confession (recommended by the Jerusalem Chamber as a must read!), and an outstanding little book Baptism, Election, and the Covenant of Grace (one of Kyle’s favorite books on baptism!). He also regularly blogs over at www.Heidelblog.net and is an expert podcaster at The Heidelcast (putting us to shame).

What are some different theories of creation? Why is understanding the creation account important for our understanding of redemption? How was each person of the Trinity involved in creation? Why is it important that God created out of nothing? What practicality does creation have in the Christian life? These are some of the questions we address in today’s episode. Tune in as Shawn, Joel, Nathan, and Kyle discuss WCF 4.1:
It pleased God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, for the manifestation of the glory of His eternal power, wisdom, and goodness, in the beginning, to create, or make of nothing, the world, and all things therein whether visible or invisible, in the space of six days; and all very good.

This special episode is a Q&A of all things related to chapter three. Thanks for those who sent in questions. Tune in as we discuss: 1) Was Molinism and/or Middle Knowledge fairly represented in Episode 3.2? 2) What does it mean to “obey the gospel”? 3) Are your hosts supra or infralapsarian? 4) What approach do we take to preaching the decree of God? 5) What advice can be given to those who struggle with the contents of this chapter?

In today’s episode, “Predestination’s Prudence and Care, or a Discussion on the Experiential Results of the Doctrine of Predestination by Which the Real and Tangible Blessings of this Doctrine for God’s People is Manifest Not in Meditation and Naval Gazing but in Our Piety and Worship,” we discuss questions like: what is doctrine? How and why do some people respond to predestination? What is “care” and “prudence”? How can this truth be used to comfort and assure us? What place does it have in private, family, and corporate worship? Tune in as Nathan, Joel, Shawn, and Kyle discuss WCF 3.8:
The doctrine of this high mystery of predestination is to be handled with special prudence and care, that men, attending the will of God revealed in His Word, and yielding obedience thereunto, may, from the certainty of their effectual vocation, be assured of their eternal election. So shall this doctrine afford matter of praise, reverence, and admiration of God; and of humility, diligence, and abundant consolation to all that sincerely obey the Gospel.

What is reprobation? Is it a biblical word? Is this only a corollary to election? Why are people reprobated? Can reprobation bring God praise? What counsel would you give to someone who thinks they are reprobate? Can this truth be used as a comfort for believers? These are some of the questions we address in today’s episode. Tune in as Nathan, Joel, Shawn, and Kyle discuss WCF 3.7:
The rest of mankind God was pleased, according to the unsearchable counsel of His own will, whereby He extends or withholds mercy, as He pleases, for the glory of His sovereign power over His creatures, to pass by; and to ordain them to dishonor and wrath for their sin, to the praise of His glorious justice.

How does God’s ordaining all things establish second causes? What is a biblical definition of “elect”? Is election personal and individual? What does “redemption” mean? What is a biblical definition of calling, justification, sanctification, and glorification? How can we understand the comprehensive nature of salvation? How are all of these benefits “in Christ”? How does God communicate them to us? These are just a few of the questions we discuss in this week’s episode. Join Shawn, Joel, Nathan, and Kyle as we sit down to discuss Westminster Confession of Faith 3.6:
As God has appointed the elect unto glory, so has He, by the eternal and most free purpose of His will, foreordained all the means thereunto. Wherefore, they who are elected, being fallen in Adam, are redeemed by Christ, are effectually called unto faith in Christ by His Spirit working in due season, are justified, adopted, sanctified, and kept by His power, through faith, unto salvation. Neither are any other redeemed by Christ, effectually called, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved, but the elect only.

What are some of the challenges people have with the biblical teaching on predestination? Where do we see predestination in the Bible? What is the significance of God’s mercy and love in predestination? Why is it before the foundation of the world? Did he predestine some due to foresight? What’s the highest purpose of God’s predestination? These are just a few of the questions we discuss in this week’s episode. Join Shawn, Joel, Nathan, and Kyle as we sit down to discuss Westminster Confession of Faith 3.5:
Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to His eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of His will, has chosen, in Christ, unto everlasting glory, out of His mere free grace and love, without any foresight of faith, or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or any other thing in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving Him thereunto; and all to the praise of His glorious grace.

What is the difference between predestination and foreordination? Why does the Confession speak of angels? What comfort can come to us from the doctrine of predestination? How does it help us to understand redemption? Why is predestination not simply fate? Is predestination individual or a class of people? These are some of the questions we try to answer on today’s episode. Join Joel, Nathan, Shawn, and Kyle as they discuss Westminster Confession of Faith 3.4:
These angels and men, thus predestinated, and foreordained, are particularly and unchangeably designed, and their number so certain and definite, that it cannot be either increased or diminished.

Is “predestination” a biblical vocabulary word? How do you help people understand this word? What is the difference between predestination and foreordination? Why does the Confession talk about angels? What comfort can believers have by this and what warning can be given to unbelievers? Is Kyle going to reveal his lapsarian position? These are some of the questions we discuss on today’s episode. Join Joel, Shawn, Nathan and Kyle as they discuss Westminster Confession of Faith 3.3:
By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angels are predestinated unto everlasting life; and others foreordained to everlasting death.
