THE REVIVAL FILES: THE INDONESIAN REVIVAL MOVEMENT

What happens when ordinary people become hungry for God—and that hunger begins to spread?

In this episode of The Jesus Sampler, we travel back to Indonesia in the 1960s, where a remarkable Christian awakening began to sweep across communities, churches, villages, and islands.

This wasn't simply a movement led from the pulpit. Young people and ordinary lay believers began going out in small groups to share the Gospel. Reports from the time described an extraordinary surge of conversions, new believers, prayer gatherings, evangelism, and a growing demand for Bibles.

The movement was especially significant in places like Timor, where the revival became associated with widespread repentance, passionate worship, family prayer, evangelism, and dramatic church growth. Historical accounts also describe laypeople becoming increasingly involved in evangelistic ministry.

But the Indonesian Revival cannot be separated from the turbulent political and social circumstances of the 1960s. The revival unfolded alongside the upheaval that followed the attempted 1965 coup and the violence that followed it, making the story both extraordinary and complicated.

So what happened when everyday believers decided they couldn't keep the message to themselves?

You don’t need a pulpit. You don’t need a platform. You don’t need a ministry title.

You just need to be willing to say yes.

In this episode, we dive into the book of Acts and uncover what it really means to live as an everyday missionary—right where you are. We talk about the disciples who left their comfort behind, the idols hiding in the ordinary things of our lives, and what happens when we stop bowing to the gods of our culture and start running full-force after Jesus.

And then we meet Priscilla and Aquila—a married couple who weren't famous preachers. They were tentmakers. They worked ordinary jobs, opened their home, took risks, moved from city to city, and followed the Gospel wherever it was moving.

They gave God their ordinary. And He made it holy.

But here's the question this episode forces us to ask:

What if comfort is keeping you from obedience?

What if the person sitting in the back pew praying for someone to step out… is waiting for you?

Your ministry is wherever your feet are.

At your job.
In your home.
In your friendships.
In your wilderness season.

We’ve made the word “awesome” so casual that we use it for everything—but when Scripture calls God awesome, it means something far greater: reverence, holy fear, wonder, and absolute awe.
