Our guest this episode is the regional lead for DocBike Staffordshire (#lukeslegacy) Carol Close. She campaigns vigorously for Biker safety throughout the midlands and is very grateful for the support offered from Staffordshire police and the healthcare professional who work with the charity. First and foremost however, she is a Mum who is coming to terms with the tragic loss of her Son Luke in a motorcycle accident in August 2019 age 28.

The DocBike charity combines highly qualified doctors or critical care paramedics with two wheels to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads due to motorcycle collisions. Wherever possible, this doctor or paramedic also works on the local air ambulance. It is part of their every-day job, to treat and save the most severely injured and sick patients and help them to reach hospital alive.

With over 40 years experience as a Social Worker Andy has a fascinating story to tell. From his humble beginnings as a young man who stumbled into the profession to the pro-active ambassador he is today. Coordinating projects within the city of Stoke-on-Trent such as ‘Goal Difference’ which is an initiative that encourages men to meet and talk through some of life’s challenges. Andy has been on quite a journey and seen many changes regarding how society approaches issues relating to mental health. He lives by the philosophy that there is good in everyone and I am sure you will enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

Iwan Gronow’s music has been shaped by his time and experiences in two worlds: his youth spent exploring the grunge scene in Cornwall and later becoming deeply embedded in the music of Manchester. Iwan’s first three singles demonstrate his versatility as an artist. Debut In The Mire combines a melodic Numan-esque feel with a dark undercurrent. Single number two, ‘Second Guess’, is a more upbeat, striding song that touches on influences from Depeche Mode and XTC. Highest Symbol, Iwan’s third single, feels more rural and hints at his past in the South West. It shows a different side to his creativity. While still deeply melodic and building in intensity, the new material is introspective and emotionally rich.mMoving to Manchester with his band Haven in the early 2000s, Iwan started a new chapter in his musical journey. Throwing everything they owned into a van, Haven turned up on the doorstep of the late, great Joe Moss. Joe, who managed The Smiths, built a strong relationship with Haven and would become the band’s manager and mentor. He introduced Haven to Johnny Marr, who produced both their albums. Haven signed to Radiate, a subsidiary of Virgin, and their debut album Between The Senses charted in the top 20. The album included the hits Say Something and Till the End. In 2013, Iwan was invited to play bass in Johnny’s band, a position he’s held ever since. As well as performing on the albums Playland and Call The Comet, Iwan has toured the world and played festivals including Glastonbury, Coachella and Fuji Rock, while also appearing on Later With Jools Holland and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

‘Joe’s best friend’ is the only way to describe Tom, or ‘Pal’ as Joe always called him! They grew up together and shared so many important milestones. Yes he is extremely intelligent and perceptive but that far from defines him. He is kindness personified and I sincerely hope you know someone like Tom and have them in your lives. In this episode we talk about living in Budapest and Cologne. Overcoming illness and resilience in the face of very challenging situations.

Darryn Scott is from Wicklow, Ireland.  He is creative, interesting, kind and radiates positivity. Yes, his story is at times desperate and it’s clear that its only through the love and support of his wife Elaine and his close friends and family that he’s the person he is today. Pulling no punches about his fight with Testicular Cancer both during and post treatment, Darryn’s journey is eye opening and certainly life affirming.
