Real preparedness isn't just about what you buy. It's about learning how to use what you already have.
Wayne Rankin returns to The Joe Rooz Show for Wednesdays with Wayne, and this week we're getting practical about homesteading, self-reliance, forestry, food production, and turning the resources around you into something useful.
Wayne takes us inside the latest work happening at the Rankin Ranch in Washington, where he and Rosanna are transforming their property into an increasingly productive and self-sufficient homestead.
We discuss Wayne's plans to place five acres into a forest restoration program, selectively harvest and replant timber, and turn trees from his own property into professionally milled lumber, fence posts and years' worth of firewood.
That land is also opening the door to the next phase of the homestead: raising cattle for beef.
Wayne explains how he plans to use the available acreage, locally available food resources and his network of experienced friends to raise, butcher, process and store his own meat.
But that's only part of the system.
We also talk about gardening, keeping chickens productive through the winter, using garden leftovers as animal feed, harvesting berries, producing honey from their own bees, food preservation, vacuum sealing, freezer organization, hunting, forestry management and the planned construction of a traditional smokehouse.
Throughout the conversation, Wayne shares lessons learned from decades of hands-on experience—from growing up with Depression-era gardening and food-preservation practices to working with the Forest Service, planting trees, fighting fires and eventually developing his own rural property.
We also discuss an important part of practical preparedness that often gets overlooked: knowing how to fix things yourself. When Wayne recently dealt with problems involving his propane stove and plumbing, having the knowledge and willingness to troubleshoot the problems saved hundreds of dollars.
Preparedness doesn't necessarily require owning hundreds of acres or buying every piece of survival gear you can find.
Sometimes it starts by looking at the land, tools, skills, food and people already around you and asking:
What can I do with what I've already got?
