For the second time in eight years, Democratic voters elected Crist as their nominee for governor, choosing the seasoned veteran over Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who was vying to become the state's first female governor. Crist now has just 11 weeks to unite his party, energize the Democratic base and convince independent voters that the state needs a new direction.

The Senate race between Rubio and Demings is on.

The two have been focused on each other for months — their primaries were not competitive — but on Tuesday night, the contours of the race were clear: Rubio plans to brand Demings a "Pelosi Puppet" who is inextricably linked to President Joe Biden, while Demings plans to attack Rubio as ineffective, selfish and wedded to a Republican Party dominated by Trump.

U.S. officials in the national security community expressed shock and concern at the former president’s cavalier treatment of classified material. One official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic, said they were astonished at the “recklessness” of the move.

It’s an “affront” to “those people who’ve spent their lives protecting and enforcing a rules-based order only to have someone come along and use his special access to unlawfully collect and retain highly classified documents,” the person said.

It can take up to a decade to declassify certain information, said one former defense official who still holds a security clearance, so the fact that Trump took hundreds of pages of classified material is “one of the worst things I’ve ever heard.”

“There’s no gray area here. I’m just appalled,” the person said.

Rep. Mike Garcia, a Republican currently running for re-election in a competitive race in the Santa Clarita area, drew outrage after comparing the Biden administration and the Democratic Congressional majority to the Nazi regime.

Just a few weeks ago, triple-digit temperatures and drought conditions were baking North Texas and drying up the Trinity River in Dallas. But overnight, rain pounded the region and filled up the river basin. 

The rain was so powerful that an apartment in downtown Dallas quickly ended up with two feet of water inside. 

It also caused power outages at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport on Monday afternoon, leading to more than 250 flight cancellations. 

In Utah's Zion National Park, torrential rains turned hiking paths treacherous, putting park goers at risk. One person was filmed clinging to a large tree trunk in fast-moving flood waters. The search continues for a 29-year-old woman from Tucson, Arizona, who was hiking with her friends when the storm hit. 

"There are more than 20 people working on a search and rescue operation, and they're working all along the length of Zion Canyon," said Zion National Park spokesman Jonathan Shafer.

In one exchange on “CNN Newsroom,” Acosta asked Wolf point-blank who won the 2020 election and whether he believed Biden triumphed “fair and square.” Wolf acknowledged that Biden was president, but failed to respond directly, claiming that illegalities and fraud existed in elections and should be investigated. (There’s no evidence election fraud affected the 2020 vote.)

Acosta pointed out that Trump pressed his election lies in lawsuits that were shot down more than 60 times in court (often by Republican judges and even some appointed by Trump).

When Wolf said both the left and right “do not have confidence in our election system,” Acosta replied: “Our elections are fine.”

“You are the former acting secretary of Homeland Security and you’re spreading doubt and fear,” Acosta continued.

“These are facts,” Wolf said.

“No, these are alternative facts,” Acosta followed.

Wolf made a toothless call for integrity in elections. A frustrated Acosta snapped that “we also need to have integrity among officials who work in government and who have left the government who will tell the American people the truth.”

Congressional Republicans vowed Monday that they will continue to investigate Dr. Fauci’s conduct as the nation’s top infectious disease expert, who advised the Biden administration’s Covid-19 strategy and public communications, even after he leaves his post in the federal government.

“Dr. Fauci lost the trust of the American people when his guidance unnecessarily kept schools closed and businesses shut while obscuring questions about his knowledge on the origins of COVID. He owes the American people answers,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy tweeted. “@HouseGOP majority will hold him accountable.”

Fauci announced Monday that he would be resigning from his roles as chief medical adviser to President Biden and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, effective December. The 81-year-old doctor served in government for over 50 years. He noted that he will not be retiring but will “pursue the next chapter of my career.”

Throughout the pandemic, Fauci was accused of misleading the American people as to the risks, origin, and efficacy of mitigation measures for the Covid-19 virus.

The line could open for service by as soon as 2033, the authority projects. Stations are slated for San Francisco International Airport/Millbrae and the Caltrain Mission Bay station at Fourth and King streets, which would eventually be replaced by a station in the basement of Salesforce Transit Center.

Major hurdles to the project remain. For starters, California hasn’t figured out where it will get up to $25 billion needed to build the San Francisco and Silicon Valley bullet-train extensions.

Nevertheless, approval of the project’s final spur north into the heart of the Bay Area is a significant milestone. It’s also the latest in a series of wins for high-speed rail in recent months, a reprieve after years of spiraling costs and litigation caused some Democratic state legislators to consider pulling the plug.

The Biden administration urged Russia Friday to surrender Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and avoid a potential reprise of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster — amid speculation that Moscow is considering shelling the facility in a “false flag” operation. Russian forces have held the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant since March. Recently, the plant has served as a base for several Russian artillery units that have kept up constant fire on the nearby Ukrainian front lines. “We are very concerned about military operations at or near any of Ukraine’s nuclear power facilities,” a senior US defense official said Friday. “We’ve been very clear that fighting near a nuclear power plant is dangerous and irresponsible, and we want the fighters and Russia to operate with extreme caution and conduct no actions that would result in a potential radiological release.”

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said Tuesday that the FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club shows the federal government was akin to the actions of the Gestapo, the notorious secret police in Nazi Germany.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, condemned Scott’s statement, calling it “repulsive” and said the senator should apologize for using “such a disturbing and reckless analogy.”

“To compare the serving of a search warrant authorized by a Federal judge and the US Department of Justice to the conduct of the Nazi secret police who directed the deportation of Jews to ghettos, concentration camps and mass murder sites is not just factually errant and irresponsible, it is repulsive,” Wasserman Schultz said via email. “Jews never stood a chance against Hitler’s Gestapo police. What a dumb, disgraceful, insensitive and dangerous thing to say.”

Brian Stelter, the top media reporter at CNN, is leaving the network after executives decided to cancel his Sunday show, “Reliable Sources,” in one of the first big programming moves under new leadership at the company. The final edition of the show will be on Sunday, a spokesman for CNN said on Thursday. The cancellation of “Reliable Sources” — a show that has aired for about three decades — is a striking change by Chris Licht, the new chairman of CNN, who took over this spring after the sudden resignation of Jeff Zucker. Mr. Zucker left after failing to disclose a romantic relationship with another top CNN executive. Under Mr. Licht, CNN has eschewed the “breaking news” banners that once heralded stories large and small, and political news shows have tried to book more conservative voices. He has given few other public clues about any possible broader changes at the cable network.

The decision to cancel the show is part of CNN’s “refreshed Sunday lineup,” the company spokesman said on Thursday. The lineup will include a number of new programs, such as “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace,” an interview program featuring the veteran Sunday show interlocutor
