The U.S. DOJ filed a lawsuit Friday against the state of Georgia over its new election integrity act alleging that it is discriminatory and aims to restrict citizens from voting.

Attorney General Merrick Garland and Kristen Clarke, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, announced the suit, which alleges that the Georgia law discriminates against black voters.

“The rights of all eligible citizens to vote are the central pillars of our democracy,” Garland said at a press conference at the Justice Department. “They are the rights from which all other rights ultimately flow.”

Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who killed George Floyd on a Minneapolis street last year, was sentenced Friday to 22 and half years in prison. Under Minnesota law, Chauvin will have to serve two-thirds of his sentence, or 15 years -- and he will be eligible for supervised release for the remaining seven and a half years.
